Penhaligon News Letter 19th September 2014
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to all of you who came to our Meet the Teacher afternoon on Wednesday. It was great to meet you all and let you know how we teach in Penhaligon. If you could not make it and would like a copy of the leaflet we handed out with information about how to support your child’s reading, please let us know and we will put a copy in their book bag.
This week, we have been learning how to write and improve instructions. Can your child spot bossy verbs in recipes and other places? Can they tell you all the other things we need to remember in instructions, eg a list of things you will need and bullet points?
We used our recipes to make some very healthy smoothies in DT – many thanks to Mrs Follett who spent this morning supervising the making of 25 different flavoured smoothies! The children discussed the need for hygiene when preparing food and thought about what made the smoothies healthy compared to some other types of food.
In numeracy, we have been looking at 100 squares and learning how we can use it to add and take away in 10s by moving up and down columns. The children have had lots of practice and have been applying their skills to money, adding and taking 10p or 20p from different prices.
In science, we have studied life cycles and the children have drawn one for a butterfly. They have thought about other animal life cycles too and produced some really good work.
Finally, a big WELL DONE to everyone who read 5 times or more this week. We had a record-breaking 17 children who managed our target of 5 times this week – can we get all 25 next week?
Don’t forget to follow our class blog at http://perranporth.j2webby.com/ and remember you can always drop in to see us or email us on penhaligon@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Many thanks.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Willetts
