Boscawen Newsletter 27th May 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
The children have all been completely engrossed in our topic this term and it has been a real pleasure to watch them develop their understanding of this fascinating part of our history.
Next term, our topic will be Shadow Dancers. In science, we will investigate light and shadow, as well as the dangers and uses of the sun. In maths, we will continue studying multiplication and division, shape and data handling. Our literacy focus will be poetry and in geography, we will be thinking about day and night and how the earth’s tilt affects our lives.
We will be swimming on the first day back after the half term break. Please note that we start back on Tuesday, Monday is a staff training day. Fridays will still be normal PE and full kits, including trainers, will be needed every week.
Today was Mrs Barbery’s last day with us as she will be moving to Year 1. She is a fantastic TA and we will miss her! However, we are very luck to now have Mr Thompson who is training to be Marshall’s new one to one TA as Mr Lara will begin teacher training with us in September.
Can we just remind you that children are allowed a drink in a bottle on their tables, but this must be water, not squash or fruit juice, thank you.
We hope you all have a lovely week off, see you next term.
If you have any questions, please email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk. Thank you.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Forest School
Unfortunately we have had our last Forest School session for this term. The children have had an amazing experience learning outside of the classroom and we would all like to thank Kelly for leading the sessions.

St Piran Class Newsletter- 26th May 2016
This Week
The highlight of our week has been Sports Day. The children all completed their chosen events with smiles on their faces and enjoyed the fun filled afternoon. Thank you for everyone who came along. It was fantastic to hear so many cheering the children on.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘ue’, ‘au’ and ‘aw’. After Half Term we will be revisiting ‘oe’, ‘ew’ and ‘ph’. The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check will take place in the second week after Half Term. The children will asked to read 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The check will take up to ten minutes and will be conducted by myself on a one to one basis in the meeting room. I have explained to the children that they will all be reading real words and alien words with me in the meeting room but do not wish to worry the children about the check. All children have read real words and nonsense words with me previously which means that the check should not cause the children any distress.
Home Learning
For Home Learning over the holiday I would like the children to practise their Phonics. Children need to be able to recognise all of the Phonemes in phase 2, 3, and 5 and also be able to segment and blend them in words accurately. I have included some real and alien words in their Home Learning books to practise with and also the Phase 5 Phonemes. http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ The website ‘Phonics play’ has some excellent games for practising segmenting and blending real words and alien words. Please also use the Phonics Books the children brought home in Trevithick. For an extra challenge why not keep a diary of your Half Term.
Support tips:
- Encourage your child to teach you the action for the Phoneme.
- Play Phonics hangman using sound buttons. (Sound buttons are used during Phonics sessions. They help the children to see how many Phonemes are in each word. Your child should be able to show you what sound buttons are and how they are used)
- Use a timer to write down as many words as you can using a specific Phoneme.
Many thanks
Rachel Kitaruth, Laura Dix and Sam Barnes

Trengrouse Half Term Home-learning
Hi everyone,
Here is Trengrouse’s half term home-learning – they should also ensure they’re reading regularly and fill in their reading records. The home-learning is expected back in on the first day back, which is Tuesday 7th June.
We also have swimming on that first Tuesday back in school – please ensure the children have their kit with them!
Have a lovely break!
Mr Harris.
