Two special visitors
This afternoon we were lucky enough to meet Kira and Jade. Two Golden Retrievers who we learnt about and they gave lots of attention to. Thank you to Zara’s Mum for arranging the visit.

Homework
For homework this week I would like children to complete the doubling and halving worksheets. The children should be able to recall the double facts for numbers 1-5 and then the numbers 1-10. To help your child with doubling use counters or household objects to help them see the process. For doubling two digits numbers this week we have learnt to partition two digit numbers then to double then tens followed by the units. For example to double the number 14 you would double the ten first (10 + 10= 20), then double the 4 (4 +4 = 8), then add together the tens and the units (20 + 8).This method also works for halving even two digit numbers halve the tens first and then the units.
Newquay Zoo Trip
On Tuesday our class will be visiting Newquay Zoo to learn how different animals have adapted according to their habitats. The children all need to wear their school uniform and to have a packed lunch unless previously ordered. Children will also need to wear suitable footwear and to have with them a waterproof coat, a sun hat and sun tan lotion, depending on the weather. It perhaps is a good idea to put your child’s packed lunch, drinks bottle, waterproof coat and sun hat into a rucksack with their name on so that it is easy to carry. We will be returning to school in time for the end of the school day and after school clubs. Please note children do not need to bring their book bags with them to school on Tuesday.
Warm weather
As the weather gets warmer just a reminder that children are allowed to bring their own drinks bottles into the classroom which can be refilled throughout the day. Please make sure the drinks bottle is named. Children may also wear hats and sunglasses at lunchtime please make sure these are named.
Transition afternoon
On Wednesday the 1st of July St Piran class will be spending the afternoon in Penhaligon Class with their next teacher Mr Howes. This afternoon will allow the children to meet Mr Howes again and get to know him better in preparation for September.
Many thanks

Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we had a fantastic trip to the beach. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come with us. Thanks also go to Perranporth Gardens Charities who kindly lent us their beach wheelchairs. We all had a really good time making beach art and we have used the trip as inspiration for acrostic poems about Chapel Rock later in the week.
In computing this week, we have learnt how to make a block chart using the information we collected on last week’s bug hunt.
In our topic work, we have begun to build our carnival float and have painted some beautiful parrots, as well as continuing to create our carnival masks. We have also learnt more about Brazil.
We will continue to swim on Monday and Friday so please ensure that your child has their swimming kit in school on those days.
If you have any questions, please drop in to see either of us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you for all the cardboard boxes which have been sent in. We will begin constructing our carnival floats shortly!
In our topic work, we have begun to look at Brazil and have written a list of things we would like to find out about the country. We were really impressed with the children’s questions, e.g. Does the rain make it cold at the equator? And Who was the first person to go into the Amazonian rainforest? We will begin our research on these questions and more next week.
On Wednesday, we spent the whole morning outside – firstly using the environment as inspiration for our poems with similes, and then working in the Environmental Area creating miniature adventure courses for woodlice! The children all worked very hard.
We will continue to swim on Mondays and Fridays, so please ensure your child has swimsuit and towel with them on those days.
This Wednesday, we will have our first trip to the beach. Your child has a letter with a tear off slip which needs to be returned as soon as possible – we would really like some parent volunteers to accompany us, so if you would like to join us, please let either of us know, thank you.
As always, if you have any questions, please drop in to see us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Phonics Screening Check
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check statutory assessment will take place next week. The children will asked to read 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The check will take up to ten minutes and will be conducted by myself on a one to one basis in the meeting room. I have explained to the children that they will all be reading real words and alien words with me in the meeting room but do not wish to worry the children about the check. All children have read real words and nonsense words with me previously which means that the check should not cause the children any distress.
Support tips:
- Use your phonics pack to practise reading real words and nonsense words with your child.
- Use the Phonics Play website to practise sorting real words and nonsense words.
Homework
For homework this week I would like the children to practise their phonics by using their phonics books, reading real words and nonsense words, and playing on phonics games on the Phonics Play website. I will not be setting spellings for this week.
Swimming
Our class will be swimming on a Monday afternoon and on a Thursday morning. Each child will need to have a named swimming costume and a towel in school with them on these days. If you would like your child to wear goggles, please bring in a note confirming you give permission for your child to wear goggles whilst swimming. If you would like to volunteer to help the children change or are willing to help from in the pool please come and see myself or a member of the team to discuss details and availability.
Special visitor
Hopefully next week we will be having a special visit from a puppy and their owner who is an experienced dog breeder. We will be learning about how to look after a puppy and discussing the changes that will happen to the puppy as it grows up. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding allergies, phobias etc.
Many thanks
