Trelawny Class – Homework – Spring half-term 1

Homework was issued today. It will be issued every Friday and collected in or tested on the following Friday.

There are three different homeworks to do:

1. Topic homework grid – Choose one activity each week.

2. CGP Maths – Do the weekly activities. Please bring your book in every Friday so that we can mark them as a class and I can put the marks onto my computer log. If you get really stuck on a question, come and see me and I will help you.

3. Spellings. There are different spellings for Green, Blue and Orange Literacy groups. You will be tested on them every Friday.

Good luck!

Verbal

I enjoy reading,

writing &

speaking

Make a list of 5 mining inventions. Research the dates of the inventions and order them chronologically.

Write a letter to a Cornish miner. What would you ask him or her?

Or

Mines were dangerous places. Mine shafts are still dangerous today. Create a poster warning people not to climb down mine shafts.

Mind-map all the things that you have learnt about Cornish mining so far. Create a storyboard of someone working down a Cornish mine. This could be a comic strip or cartoon. (Have a look at www.comiclife.com to help) Research 3 mines from anywhere in the world and rate them on how deep they go down. Write about the average day of a Cornish miner.

Or if you know someone who works or worked in a mine, interview them about their life and report to the class.

Visual

I enjoy painting,

drawing &

visualizing

Find a picture of a Cornish mine and write a description of it.

Or draw a picture of Humphry Davy or Richard Trevithic and write a profile of them.

Create a world map that shows some of the metals mined around the world today. Make a collage about Cornish mining using materials and photos. Design a magazine showing Cornish mining clothes and equipment.

Include the clothes of women and children.

Draw and label a picture of outfits and equipment from modern mining. Create a 3D model of a tin mine or a piece of mining equipment.

Kinaesthetic

I enjoy doing

hands-on

activities

Traditionally Cornish miners had pasties for lunch.

Make a pasty with the help of your parent/guardian.

Make a collection of rocks and minerals and share with the class. Cornish miners travelled to many different parts of the world.

Find a country that Cornish miners travelled to and on A4 paper draw and colour in the flag of that country.

With your parent/guardian visit Heartlands or Poldark Mine and write a report about what you found out there about Cornish mining. Make a piece of Cornish mining clothing or equipment of your choice. With the help of your parent/ guardian find different types of metals around your house and try and discover what they are and where they came from.

Musical

I enjoy making &

Listening to music

Create a song for Cornish miners to sing down the mine to keep their spirits up. Try to use musical instruments or items that make interesting sounds to imitate the noises of a Cornish mine underground. Perform a rap that includes five facts about Cornish tin mining. Listen to the anthem of Cornwall (‘Trelawny- The Song of the Western Men’) and compare it to a modern pop song of your choice. Write down which is your favourite and why? Write a song or poem about a pasty, the miners traditional food.

Create your own small musical instrument that you could take down the mine to keep everyone entertained.

WARNING: Mines are dangerous places. Please don’t climb over any mines unsupervised or go into any mineshafts to do any of these activities!
