Oliver Jeffers Day !

Today Trevithick and St Piran classes took part in an Oliver Jeffers carousel day. The children completed a variety of activities including making their own penguins and packing a suitcase for a cold holiday. It was fantastic to see the children from both classes learning collaboratively!

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 13th November

This Week

This week in Maths we have been learning about shape. We went on a shape hunt in the classroom and have been describing shapes by their properties. In English we have been learning about invitations and wrote our own invitations in our Special Write this week. In Science we learnt about the sun. We made our own suns using oil pastels and recorded our own facts about the sun.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ou’, ‘ie’, and ‘ea’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. Next week we will be learning the ‘oy’, ‘ir’ and ‘ue’ phonemes you may wish to get a head start on these phonemes. We have just begun phase 5 of our phonics. In this phase we will be learning some new phonemes and the alternative pronunciations and spellings of phonemes we already know.

Home learning

This week in English our learning has focussed on the Charlie and Lola story ‘This is actually my party’. We have created our own freeze frames for parts of the story and written sentences about different parts of the story. For home learning this week I would like the children to write about the best birthday party they have ever been to. I would like all children to write at least one sentence about a birthday party. For an extra challenge see if you can include wow words (adjectives) in your writing.

Support tips:

  • Talk to your child about the best party they have ever been invited to.
  • Discuss what made it such a good party.
  • Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
  • Encourage phonetic spelling unless it is a tricky word (words that we can’t sound out such as the) or a high frequency word that they recognise (e.g. have).
  • Ask your child to read through their writing to check that it makes sense and to check for capital letters and full stops.

Oliver Jeffers Trip

We are going on our trip on Monday. Children need to be in their school uniform and to either be wearing or carrying a waterproof coat. If possible please put your child’s packed lunch into a rucksack or bag for them to carry.  Please make sure your child has a packed lunch and a drink (unless you have ordered lunch from the kitchen). As you will be aware we are a nut free school. A pupil coming on the trip has a nut allergy. Please make sure nut products are not included in your child’s packed lunch.

Many thanks

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 6th November

This Week

This week in Maths we have been learning to tell the time. The children have enjoyed playing time games and challenging each other to tell the time. In English we have been exploring the Charlie and Lola story ‘This is actually my party’. We wrote excellent sentences using feelings words. In Deisgn and Technology we tasted fruits to put in our jelly. We are learning how to make healthy party jelly with Mrs Davis. We learnt our first group dance in PE and enjoyed creating our own moves.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘air’, ‘ear’, ‘ure’, and ‘er’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. You can find suggestions of words to use in your child’s Phonics Book.

Home Learning

This week in our maths we have been learning about time and in particular telling the time to the hour. This week I would like the children to record what they were doing at 10:00am, 1:00pm and 5:00pm for one day of the weekend. You might like to draw clock faces showing these times. Children can record what they were doing in pictures or in writing or with both.  For an extra challenge you might like to change the time on your clock or watch to an o’clock time or a half past time and ask your child to tell you the time.

Support tips:

  • The children should be able to recognise o’clock.
  • You might like to discuss the difference between am and pm.
  • It may help your child if you refer to the hour hand as the short hand and the minute hand as the long hand.

Parents evenings

Please remember to attend parents evening next week. Appointment times will be outside the classroom in case you need a reminder. If you are unable to attend parents evening please come and see me to arrange a convenient time to discuss your child’s progress.

Oliver Jeffers Trip

Please remember to bring in the Oliver Jeffers trip consent form and money.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 16th October

This Week

In Literacy this week we have continued our learning on instructions. We wrote our own instructions for how to brush your teeth and had an excellent demonstration from Seb. In Maths we have been focussing on number and place value. We have been counting in 10s and 5s and using pictures to help us. In Design and Technology we started creating our own houses and in SEAL we have been practising working together as a team.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ur’, ‘ow’ and ‘oi’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. You can find suggestions of words to use in your child’s Phonics Book.

Homework

This week’s homework is a place value Maths activity. The children either need to complete the one more and one less worksheet or the abacus worksheet which involves tens and units. For an extra challenge why not draw your own representations of two digit numbers using tens and units. For example, you might draw the number 22 as two big circles for the tens and then two small triangles for the units.

Support tips:

  • Use a number line or a 100 square to help your child find the number and the numbers that are one more and one less. If you type 100 square into a search engine you should find ‘splat square’ which is an interactive 100 square that you can use to support Maths activities.
  • Discuss two digit numbers with your child. Encourage them to think about the then 1st digit as the tens number and the 2nd digit as the units.

Harvest Festival

Our joint Harvest Festival takes place on Tuesday at 9:30am at St Michael’s church. We will be walking the children down and back to the church. We ask the children to bring in a contribution to our donation to the local foodbank. Suitable items include tins of fruits, vegetables, soups, packets of rice, pasta and biscuits. Thanks in advance for you donations. Looking forward to seeing you at the celebration.

St Piran Class Newsletter 09.10.15

This Week

Subtraction has been our focus in Maths this week. We have been using ‘tap and unwrap’ to solve Subtraction number sentences. The children have been fantastic at practising their ‘take aways’. In English we have been writing instructions. We have had been taking on the role of bossy boots in the classroom to practise writing in this style. In Computing we have been learning how to log on to the laptops independently which has been quite a challenge. The children are e-safety experts and have learnt a rhyme to help them remember how to stay safe on the computers.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘or’, ‘oo’, ‘th’ and ‘ar’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. You can find suggestions of words to use in your child’s Phonics Book.

Homework

The childrens’ homework this week is to write a set of instructions for making a sandwich. We have learnt about writing instructions this week and the children wrote instructions for how to make a wolf mask. On the writing frame there are suggestions of words that the children might find helpful. For an extra challenge write your own set of instructions. For example, you might like to write a set of instructions for how to draw a cat or how to make a sand castle.

Support tips:

  • Encourage your child to sound out the words that they want to write. Don’t worry if this means the word is spelt incorrectly.
  • Encourage your child to read what they have written.
  • Reinforce the importance of capital letters and full stops.
  • Use bossy language.
