This Week
This week in English we wrote our own seaside poetry. The children wrote imaginative poems including verbs and even some similes. In Maths we have been learning about money. We investigated how many ways we could make 6p and 7p. We found that it was easier to find all of the possibilities when we used an order. In Science we have been exploring shadows and making shadow puppets.
Phonics
This week we have learnt the alternative pronunciations for ‘o’, ‘u’, ‘ie’ and ‘ow. Next week we will be continuing with alternative pronunciations. We will be learning ‘ea’, ‘er’, ‘ou’ and ‘y’.
Home learning
For home learning this week I would like the children to draw/paint/collage their own picture of the sea. I would then like the children to record their own adjectives or wow words to describe the sea. For an extra challenge why not create your own sea similes or other similes and record them in your home learning books.
Support tips:
- Discuss the sea with your child.
- Talk about the sea during the story of the ‘Mousehole cat’ to help your child think about a stormy sea.
- Help your child sound out what they would like to write.
Science
In Science the children will be exploring light. Mrs Davis has asked if you have any spare small jam jars with lids or small plastic bottles could they be brought in please.
Phonics Workshop
Don’t forget to come along to the Phonics workshop on Monday after school to find out how you can support your child with their Phonics. Please note a crèche will be provided for the children by members of staff during the workshop.
Many thanks

This Week
This week in English we have been exploring sea poetry. Next week we will be learning a poem off by heart and writing our own sea poems. In Maths this week our learning has focussed on our number bonds. The children have been fantastic at recalling their number bonds to 10 quickly. In History we found out about Grace Darling and in Art & Design we made our own rescue pictures.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘u-e’ and learnt the alternative pronunciations for ‘a’, ‘e’ and ‘i’. Next week we will be continuing with alternative pronunciations. We will be learning about ‘o’, ‘u’, ‘ie’, and ‘ow’.
Home learning
For home learning this week I would like the children to complete the number bonds word problem sheets provided. The children have been great at solving word problems this week in Maths. For an extra challenge why not create and solve your own maths word problems.
Support tips:
- Encourage your child to read the word problem through slowly so that they understand what the problem is asking them to do.
- Make sure your child records how they worked the problem out and not just the answer.
Science
In Science next week the children will be exploring light. Mrs Davis has asked if you have any spare small jam jars with lids or small plastic bottles could they be brought in for Thursday next week.
Spare clothes
We are in need of spare school clothes particularly underwear in St Piran Class. Any donations would be gratefully received.
Many thanks

This Week
This week we have started out new topic ‘To the rescue’. In English we have been writing sentences about sea rescues using connectives. In Maths we have been revisiting place value and counting on in tens from any two digit number. In History this week we have discussed the differences between sea rescue in the past and in the present.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘a-e’, ‘i-e’, ‘e-e’ and ‘o-e’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘u-e’ and the alternative pronunciations for ‘a’, ‘e’, and ‘i’.
Home learning
This week we have started our new topic ‘to the rescue’. For home learning this week I would like the children to write about an Emergency service. Who are our Emergency services and how do they help us? For an extra challenge why not find out about Grace Darling.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about what they would like to write about.
- Encourage your child to sound out what they would like to write.
- Ask your child to read their writing through to check it makes sense.
Phonics workshop
A Phonics workshop will be taking place on Monday the 25th January after school in the school hall. Please come along to find out how to support your child with their Phonics. In June St Piran Class will be taking their Phonics screening check. The check involves the children segmenting and blending a mixture of real words and pseudo words (alien words, silly words or non-words) to check that they are at the expected level. Children who do not pass the Phonics Screening check will be expected to retake the check in year 2.
Football coach
On Friday mornings our class will be taking part in additional football sessions run by a Football Association qualified coach. Children will need their PE kits in school on Mondays, Wednesdays and also Friday mornings.
Clubs
After school and lunchtime clubs begin next week. Please make sure your child knows which clubs they attend and we will also remind children. Please let us know if they are not attending the club on a particular day.
Many thanks

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 18th December
This Week
This week we made our own Christmas cards. We also performed our fantastic nativity for the whole school and our families. Thank you to everyone who came to watch!
Home learning
For home learning over the Christmas holidays I have given each child the next 99 club challenge for them to try at home. The children are responding really well to the 99 club and particularly enjoy seeing if they can beat their own score from the previous time. The children are allowed ten minutes to complete the challenge and are encouraged to check their answers before the time runs out.
Support tips:
- Advise your child to check their answers through when they have finished.
- Remind your child that if they find one number sentence particularly tricky they can leave it out and come back to it later.
- Some of the challenges include multiplication number sentences. At this stage we are encouraging children to think of multiplication as ‘lots of’. So 2 x 5 would be two lots of five. Children are allowed to draw quick pictures or arrays to help them with any of the questions.
For extra home learning over the holidays use Mathletics, Phonics play and continue to read books at home regularly. For an extra challenge why not keep a diary over the Christmas holidays.
To the Rescue
Our first topic of this term is called ‘To The Rescue’. Within this unit the children will develop an understanding of the rescue services and in particular rescues at sea. We will be learning about Grace Darling in History, poetry in our English and art based on the sea and seashore in Art and Design. At the beginning of next term the children will be given spellings. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and will need to be practised at home. Spellings will be tested informally the following Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to practise their spellings in school. Spellings will always be linked to the phonics we are learning that week.
Thank you for all of your continued support this term. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Many thanks

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 27th November
This Week
This week in Maths we have been focusing on partitioning and learning our number bonds. The children need to be able to recall number bond to 10 facts quickly. One good way to practise number bonds to 10 or 20 is to play ‘Ping pong’. In this game one person says a number and the other person has to say the number required to make 10 or 20 whilst pretending to play ping pong. (Ask the children how to play for a clearer explanation). We have also started practising for our Christmas nativity this week, the children should have a copy of their lines in their reading records, please help them to learn their lines.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘aw’, ‘wh’, ‘ph’ and ‘ew’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. Next week we will be learning the ‘ew’, ‘oe’, ‘au’, and ‘ey’ phonemes you may wish to get a head start on these phonemes. Please let me know if you have lost you Phonics book from last year and would like a new one.
Home Learning
In this English this week we have been focussing on the Oliver Jeffer’s Story ‘Lost and Found’. In this story a boy finds a penguin at his door and then tries to help the penguin return to where he came from. For home learning this week I would like the children to use their imaginations to write at least one sentence explaining where they think the penguin came from. For an extra challenge why not write your own lost and found story with a different animal or write your own animal story.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about how they think the penguin arrived at the boy’s door.
- Discuss different ways of travelling.
- Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
- Ask your child what every sentence needs to begin with and end with to encourage them to remember their capital letters and full stops.
- Encourage your child to use exciting adjectives in their writing.
FOPS Christmas raffle
We now have our list of items required by FOPS to make our Christmas hamper this year. If you would like to contribute please take the slip for the item and then bring that item in as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for your contributions. The first class to collects all items wins a prize!
Many thanks

St Piran Class Newsletter 20th November
This Week
We started this week with an exciting trip to the Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers at Cornwall College. The children behaved beautifully and have been inspired by the chance to step into a story. In Maths we have been learning about place value. We have been revisiting one more and one less with two digit numbers and began to learn about three digit numbers. In Design and Technology we painted our Diva lamps and in History we learnt about birthday celebrations in the past.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘oy’, ‘ue’, and ‘ir’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. Next week we will be learning the ‘aw’, ‘wh’, ‘ph’ and ‘ew’ phonemes you may wish to get a head start on these phonemes. Please let me know if you have lost you Phonics book from last year and would like a new one.
Home Learning
This week in our Maths we have been learning all about Place Value. For home learning this week I would like the children to find out their telephone number. Then put these single digits in order from smallest to biggest. After that choose any two digit number and write down the number that is one more and one less than this number. For an extra challenge find one more and one less than three digit numbers.
Support tips:
- Write your telephone number down for your child. Then ask them to find the smallest number first. Cross out each number as you put them into order.
- Use a search engine to find 100 splat square, an interactive 100 square to help children visualise the order of numbers.
The 99 club
Your child may have discussed the 99 club with you. The 99 club has been developed to help raise standards in Numeracy by encouraging pupils to improve their mental maths and therefore increase the speed and confidence they tackle mental maths problems in Numeracy sessions, across the curriculum and in day to day life. The children have a certain number of number sentences to complete in 10 minutes. The 11 club includes number sentences involving addition to 10, the 22 club includes number sentences involving addition to 20 and the 33 club includes both of these and number sentences involving 2x table, 10x and addition number sentences. In year 1 we will be completing the challenge once a week and all pupils start on the 11 club and work their way up. Please see me if you wish to practise with your child.
Many thanks
