Friday 17th March
This week we have been finding Fractions of amounts in our Maths. In our English we started creating our own versions of ‘We’re going on a bear hunt.’
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about the alternative pronunciations of ‘ar’, ‘air’ and ‘or’. Next week we will be learning ‘oo’, ‘ai’ and ‘ee’.
Home Learning
For home learning this week I would like the children to write at least one sentence about their favourite plant or flower. We went on a plant hunt last week and saw Daffodils, Primroses and Daisies. Ask your child to explain why they have chosen their flower or plant. The children can then draw a picture of their favourite plant or flower. For extra home learning draw/make/paint your own flowers or practise finding halves and quarters of amounts.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about their favourite plant and flower.
- Discuss what might be a good reason for choosing a favourite flower e.g. I like Daffodils because they are bright and yellow.
- Encourage your child to use their Phonics to help them segment.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 10th March
St Piran Class Newsletter- 10th March 2017
This week we have been learning about fractions in our Maths. The children have been brilliant at splitting playdough shapes into equal halves. In our English we wrote our own versions of the gingerbread man with our own characters. The children enjoyed our Cornish carousel day with Trevithick class on Monday.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about the alternative pronunciations of ‘u’, ‘i’ and ‘ear’. Next week we will be learning ‘ar’, ‘air’, ‘or’.
Home Learning
Our home learning this week is linked to our fractions learning. The children either need to read the fraction and colour in the shape appropriately or to decorate half of the biscuit template provided. For extra home learning this week practise splitting shapes into equal halves or quarters. The children really loved using playdough to explore this.
Support tips:
- Vocabulary we have used in the classroom this week-whole, equal, half, halves, splitting, parts, and quarters.
- Cutting out shapes and cutting them in half helps children to understanding halving shapes.
