A visit from our class Governor
Class governor visit.
On my recent visit to St Piran class I was very interested to see the children demonstrating their developing skills in addition and subtraction. The governors are supporting the current school focus on raising mathematical standards across the school. It was clear to see children were using a range of strategies to help them solve the calculations, it was also clear that children were using their number knowledge to help them e.g. counting in twos is quicker than counting every one!!
It was good to see so many children enjoying mathematics and for those who were finding it a bit more of a challenge you could see their determination to persevere and some enjoyment from the achievement. This also reflects the current support from governors on developing successful learners through Building Learning Power. It was a most enjoyable morning and I am looking forward to my next visit.

This week we have been continuing our Maths learning on Time. The children have been matching times on clocks to times in words. In English we wrote about our weekends and have started looking at Sea poetry. In History we have been comparing Sea rescue in the past and sea rescue in the present day.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about ‘a-e’, ‘i-e’, ‘o-e’, and ‘e-e’. Next week we will be learning about alternative pronunciations of ‘a’, ‘e’, and ‘i’.
Home Learning
We have started our new topic ‘to the rescue’. For home learning this week I would like the children to write about an Emergency service don’t forget to include pictures and photos. For extra home learning this week why not find out about Grace Darling.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about what they would like to write about.
- Encourage your child to sound out what they would like to write.
- Ask your child to read their writing through to check it makes sense.

St Piran Class Newsletter- 6th January 2017
This week we have started our new sea rescue topic. The children have explored the differences between sea side rescue in the past and the present in History. In Computing they practised their typing skills. In PE we started our gymnastics topic.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been revisiting tricky words, (specific words which can’t be ‘sounded’ out) and started learning about split digraphs (phonemes that are split by a consonant. In the word cake, the ‘a’ and the ‘e’ are working together to make the ‘a-e’ sound. Your child has brought home a spellings book today in their book bag. In their book there are 10 spellings that they need to practise for the following week. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and will need to be practised at home. Spellings will be tested informally the following Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to practise their spellings in school. Spellings will always be linked to the phonics we are learning that week.
Home Learning
For home learning this week children need to read the time underneath the clock face and draw the time onto the clock face. For other time home learning activities this week make your own clock, practise telling the time using a clock or a watch, or use the Mathletics time activities to practise your time telling skills.
Support tips:
- Use an analogue clock or a watch to practise reading and making different times with your child.
- Encourage your child to use the appropriate vocabulary, e.g. hand, hour, minute.

St piran Newsletter Friday 16th December
This week we have been writing letters to Father Christmas and performing our Nativity play.
Phonics
This term in our Phonics we have been re-capping Phase 3 of our Phonics. In the past few weeks we have learnt the new phonemes for phase 5. There are some excellent free games on Phonics Play to help your child practise their Phonics.
Home Learning
For home learning this Christmas I would like the children to write about an event which has happened in their Christmas holidays. They might like to write about their Christmas day and their favourite present. They might like to write about something special they did in the holidays.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about what they would like to write about.
- Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
- Remind your child that every sentence needs to begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
Below are some other optional activities children may like to complete during the holidays.
Extra activities:
- Share books at home with an adult or an older sibling.
- Practise letter and number formation.
- Complete number sentences using tap and unwrap or drawing their own pictures for support.
- Spellings and phonics practise. Say a word with a sound in, ask your child to segment the sounds in the word out loud and then write the word down.
- Write/type sentences or stories. Encourage your child to rehearse what they want to say out loud before writing it down or typing.
- Keep a diary of your holidays.
- Log on to Mathletics to practise Maths activities.
To the Rescue
Our first topic of next term is called ‘To The Rescue’. Within this unit the children will develop an understanding of the rescue services and in particular rescues at sea. We will be learning about Grace Darling in History, poetry in our English and art based on the sea and seashore in Art and Design. At the beginning of next term the children will be given spellings. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and will need to be practised at home. Spellings will be tested informally the following Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to practise their spellings in school. Spellings will always be linked to the phonics we are learning that week.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 9th December
This week we have been revisiting our Number bonds to 10 and 20 in our Maths. We have been doing some last minute rehearsals for our Christmas Nativity next week.
Phonics
This term in our Phonics we have been re-capping Phase 3 of our Phonics. In the past few weeks we have learnt the new phonemes for phase 5. There are some excellent free games on Phonics Play to help your child practise their Phonics.
Home Learning
For your home learning I would like the children to complete the Number bonds to 10 or Number bonds to 20 activities. Number bonds to 10 and 20 are the pairs of numbers that add together to make either 10 or 20. We have been using our fingers and using Numicon to help us with our bonds this week. For extra Home Learning this week why not play Ping-pong ( A number bond to 10 game where one person says a number and the other person says the other number needed to make 10 or 20. We have played this game a lot recently and the children really enjoy it.)
Support tips:
- Use fingers or draw your own pictures to represent the number bonds to 10. (See picture)
- Encourage your child to refer to a number line or numbers around the house to help them write their numbers the correct way.

Our performance is on Wednesday the 14th December at 2pm. We hope to see you there. Please make sure your child’s costume is in school.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 2nd December
This week we have finished writing our party game instructions in our English. We have been learning about counting in multiples of 2s, 5s, and 10s in our Maths. We have also started making our Christmas crafts for the FOPS Christmas fayre.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ea’, ‘oy’ and ‘ir’ phonemes. Next week we will be learning ‘ue’, ‘aw’, and ‘wh’. If you have spare time practise segmenting words with these phonemes in with your child.
Home Learning
For your home learning I would like you to write about something you have done this weekend or a previous weekend. For example you might have gone to the park or to the beach or attended a birthday party. I would like everyone to write at least one sentence and to draw a picture or pictures. Don’t forget your capital letters, full stops, sounding out and wow words (adjectives). As an extra challenge why not write your own invitation for our Nativity.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about what they want to write first and ask them to practise saying their sentence out loud before writing it down.
- Encourage your child to segment the words using their arm when they are spelling.
- Help your child to read through their own writing to spot their own mistakes.
Nativity
Our performance is on Wednesday the 14th December at 2pm. We hope to see you there. Please make sure your child’s costume is in school in a named carrier bag by the 9th December.
Trevithick mud kitchen
Trevithick class are in the process of creating their own exciting mud kitchen. If you have any children’s waterproofs or wellies that are no longer needed please bring them in. Any donations will be gratefully received.
Pebbles
For a Christmas craft this year we will be using pebbles. If you are able to collect any smooth round pebbles about the size of a flat satsuma please bring them in. We would be very grateful.
Dates for your Diary and Reminders
