This Week
Money has been our focus in Maths this week. We have been learning the names of all of the coins, using coins to pay for items when shopping, and solving money number sentences. We have learnt about labels in English and wrote our own labels and captions for items in the classroom. In Art and Design we started to make our wolf masks and in Design and Technology we made our own trap doors and went on a hinge hunt.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘air’, ‘oi’, ‘ure’ and ‘ear’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. You can find suggestions of words to use in your child’s Phonics Book.
St Piran Class Homework
In English this week we have been learning about labelling and captions. For homework this week I would like the children to draw an item and write their own label and caption for the item. For example they might draw a picture of their dog and explain that a dog is a type of animal. As an extra challenge see if you can include wow words in your caption and create your own labels and captions for other objects in your house.
Support tips:
- This week the children have learnt that a label tells you the name of an item and that the caption tells you more information about that item.
- Encourage your child to sound out the words that they want to write. Don’t worry if this means the word is spelt incorrectly.
- Encourage your child to read what they have written.
- Reinforce the importance of capital letters and full stops.

This Week
We wrote our own ‘Three Little Pig’ stories this week. The children created their own characters and houses to use in their stories. In Maths we have been focussing on addition this week. The children have been finding all of the ways of making numbers and adding on using tap and unwrap and number lines.
We started to choreograph our own Gymnastics routines in PE and designed our wolf masks in Art and Design.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘oa’, ‘or’, ‘ur’ and ‘ow’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. You can find suggestions of words to use in your child’s Phonics Book.
Homework
One of our activities in Maths this week has been finding all of the ways of making a number which is called partitioning. The children need either count the spots on the ladybirds or draw the spots on the dominoes to help them make the number 5 or 10. For an extra challenge use tap and unwrap to complete some addition number sentences. Please encourage your child to put their homework book in the homework book box when their homework is complete. At the back of your child’s book you will find a Wow Moment template. Please fill in this template when you have a Wow Moment which you would like to celebrate in School. Other wow moments can also be brought into the classroom and stuck into children’s Learning Adventure Books. The children really enjoy sharing their wow moments with each other and it is great to share achievements outside of School with them so please bring them in.
Support tips:
- Ask your child to count the spots that are already there.
- Write down how many there are underneath.
- Count on to find out how many are needed to make 5 or 10.
Hearing Screening
On Friday 25th September members of St Piran Class will be having a hearing test. Please contact the office if you have any further questions or concerns about the hearing test.
Mathletics
Please find a Mathletics log in attached to the front of your Childs’ reading record.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 11th September
This Week
This week in English the children have been exploring the story of the ‘Three Little Pigs’. We went into the storytelling area and created freeze frames of the main events in the story. The children particularly enjoyed acting as wolves with burnt tails. In Maths we have been focussing on the ordering of numbers and finding one more and one less than a given number. We went on a material hunt around the classroom as part of our Science and we explored the things we can do to keep our classroom a safe and happy place in SEAL.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ai’,‘ar’,‘oo’ and ‘igh’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. You should have also received a copy of the phonemes with suggested phonics websites on the reverse in your child’s book bag.
Homework
This week in English we have been exploring the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. For homework this week I would like the children to choose a favourite character from the story and write at least one sentence about that character. For example, ‘My favourite character is the big bad wolf because he is scary.’ For an extra challenge choose your favourite character from any traditional tale or fairy tale and explain why they are your favourite.
Support tips:
- Talk about the characters in the story. (The Mummy pig, the three little pigs and the big bad wolf).
- Ask your child to say their sentence out loud before they write it down.
- Encourage your child to remember their capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
- Encourage your child to sound out words that they don’t know how to spell.
Mathletics
Your child now has access to Mathletics. Mathletics is an online Maths programme allowing children to practise all aspects of Mathematics. Children can work towards certificates which are based on the amount they complete and not their level of mathematics. These certificates are awarded in assembly and the programme is hugely popular in our school. Please find an individual log in and a password in your child’s bookbag. To log in to Mathletics use a search engine to search for Mathletics. On the homescreen in the top right hand corner click ‘sign in’. Use the username and password provided to sign in. I have shown the children how to log on in class but they may require assistance at home.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 4th September
Welcome back!
Welcome back! We hope that you all enjoyed the Summer break and are ready for a new School year. The children have settled in well to St Piran Class these last two days and have enjoyed exploring their new classroom.
Meet the teacher
On Wednesday the 9th of September at 3:30pm and 5pm we are holding meet the teacher sessions at the School. Our session will take place in St Piran Classroom. Please come along to find out a bit more about what your children will be learning about this year and our routine in St Piran Class. If you are unable to attend either of these sessions please see me to arrange a meeting at a more convenient time.
Mrs Davis
Mrs Davis will be teaching the class on a Thursday afternoon whilst I am on my scheduled time out of the classroom. As a getting to know you activity your child will have brought home a brown bag which they need to fill with one or some of the suggested items. These bags need to be brought back by Thursday please and this will be the homework for this week. Next week I will set the first piece of homework which your child will bring home in their homework book. Please complete the activity with your child. Each activity is related to our learning from the week and should take no longer than twenty minutes to complete.
Reading
Your child will be asked to read and have their reading book changed at least once a week by myself or Miss Dix. If they have finished their book and would like to change it please feel free to change their reading book in the morning. Reading books are kept in colour coded boxes just outside of Penhaligon class. If you are unable to change their book please mention to one of the team that their book needs changing and we will provide the children with the opportunity to do so at a later point in the day.
Home learning
In St Piran Class ‘Home Learning’ is celebrated and the children enjoy showing their classmates the learning they have completed in their own time. If your child would like to bring in home learning to share please make sure that it is related to our current topic or our maths. At the moment we have one more week on ‘The Big Build’ focussing on construction and The Three Little Pigs.
PE Kits
Our scheduled times for PE are on a Monday afternoon and a Wednesday afternoon. Each child will need their own labelled PE kit in school on these days. We will be going outside for PE as much as the weather allows us, so please make sure your child has either trainers or plimsolls in their PE kit. As the weather turns colder children are also allowed to wear either dark tracksuit bottoms or leggings as part of their PE kit.
If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to come and see us. You can also contact me on my School email address as included below or arrange an appointment to come and see me before or after School.
Many thanks
