Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we have finished our topic, Why are Humans Animals too? The children have worked really hard and produced some fantastic work over the half term. Our topic next term will be Set in Stone, when we will investigate the Stone Age. It is a fascinating topic and we can’t wait to teach it!
We are sending all PE kits home. Can you please check that they are labelled before returning them next half term, as well as checking that your child has not grown out of their trainers!
Homework over half term is:
I enjoy maths, calculation and using measures and graphs.
Get your family and friends together and choose something to investigate. You could do something like: Who has the longest jump? Who can throw the furthest? Of, who is the tallest? You can think of your own if you like! Estimate the results first, then measure accurately. Record as 142cm, 1.42m or 1m 42cm.
This week’s spelling champs are Lucas R, Maisie and Sam Lee who all got 10 out of 10 – well done! Can anyone keep up with Sam Lee next half term and get 10 out of 10 every week?! There are no spellings over half term.
Have a lovely break and we will see you back in school on Tuesday 3rd November.
Thank you.
Mrs Smitheram and Mrs Burns.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Feadon Farm
We hope you have heard all about our fantastic trip to Feadon Farm! It was a really enjoyable day and the children made the most of all the opportunities to meet the different animals and learn about them.
Reading Diaries
Our new reading diaries have finally arrived! Thank you for your patience. Now that they are here, please record each time your child reads – they can also do this themselves, adding comments about what they have read and what they thought of it. Try to listen to your child read at least 5 times a week. We will check their diaries once a week to see how they are getting along.
Maths
In maths, we are continuing with our work on place value and using this knowledge to help with addition and subtraction. We have also been investigating 3-d shapes and their properties.
English
We have been developing our skills in writing formal letters this week, as well as learning how to take notes and write information texts about food groups. Next week, we will begin to work on adventure stories.
Spelling Superstars
Sam Lee retains his 100% record – well done! Well done also to everyone else who got 10 out of 10 last week. Spellings will be sent home again today ready for next Thursday’s test – get practising!
Just a quick reminder to parents of children with asthma
We sent all inhalers home at the end of last term. If your child is likely to need their inhaler in school, please drop it off at the office and check that your details and instructions are up to date.
If you would like to speak to us, as always, feel free to pop in and see us before or after school or email us on esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.
Mrs Smitheram and Mrs Burns.

Dear Parents and Carers,
This week in English, we have continued to work on our descriptive writing, as well as beginning to write our information texts about animals. We will continue this next week.
In Maths, we have looked at addition and subtraction, looking for number facts such as doubles or number bonds to 10 to help us with the calculations. Next week, we will be practising subtraction by counting up and applying this skill by working out change.
We are developing our understanding of our topic (Why are Humans Animals too?) through dance, art and science.
In PE, we have been learning a new dance and practising different types of balance – can your child practise one leg squats?
Please continue to listen to your child read at least 5 times a week (we are still awaiting delivery of the new reading records and will send these home as soon as we can.)
As always, if you need to talk to us, please come in and see us or email us on esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.

Boscawen Newsletter 4th September 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is lovely to see everyone back at school and ready to learn!
Our topic this half term will be Why Are Humans Animals too? Please find an outline of the topic overleaf.
PE
We will be having PE on Tuesday and Friday. Many PE lessons will take place outside so please ensure your child has a named PE kit which includes track suit bottoms or leggings, trainers or plimsolls and a warm top.
Spellings
Spellings will be sent home on Fridays to be tested on the following Thursday. Now that the children are in Key Stage 2, we expect them to practise these at home and although they will be taught the relevant spelling rules for each set of words that are sent home, we will not be practising them in class.
Homework
Homework will begin next week and will be sent home in a book as last year. In the meantime, some of you will remember our Summer Reading Challenge when children took photos of themselves reading in unusual places (like Chapel Rock pool, at the dentist and in a beach hut!) We are planning an ‘extreme reading’ display board with Year 4 and would love some more photos like those! Please email us photos of extreme reading to Mrs Smitheram!
Fruit Stall
Children in Key Stage 2 can buy fresh fruit at play time. The cost is 30p for a piece of fruit, they are also welcome to bring in their own fruit to eat if they prefer.
If you have any questions, please come and see us or email us on esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.

Around the World in 20 Days Homework Grid
Hello and welcome to the second half of the spring term!
This term our topic is called “Around the World in 20 Days”. In this Unit, the children will be taken on a journey that begins in their own country, moves to France and ends in the USA. We will be comparing life and living in these countries and studying the culture and geographical features of each whilst comparing them.
As you know we are asked to send home one literacy and one numeracy homework each week as well as spellings, reading and times tables. This term we have decided to give you all 5 of the topic homework’s now and let you choose which order you wish to complete them. Please be creative with the homework outlines and although they may be based on a literacy of numeracy focus, these can be presented in any way you see fit to inspire!
TOPIC GRID
Literacy | Numeracy |
Traditional Dishes. There are many traditional dishes and cousins that are accustomed to individual countries around the word. As we are studying UK, France and the USA, we would like you to create special traditional dish or meal for your chosen country (you choose the number of courses) and present to recipe instructions for your feast. | How Much? – Price up the ingredients for your dishes. What is the difference in price between pounds and euros or dollars? Or, how much would it cost to make this meal for 10 people? Or for your own family? |
Postcards from a far! Where in the UK or wider world have you or your family visited? Can you create a postcard “from a far” that describes the place and local culture of your chosen destination ready to add to our map? | Map it – How far is it to your chosen destinations? Where can you stop on the way to refuel and how far is it between stops? How much fuel will you need and how much will this cost in total? Use the AA route planner to help you plan your journey. |
The Long Journey. Research and plan a trip to a town or village in one of our chosen countries. Your trip should detail how and why you are visiting each place and give a short description of people or places that you could visit along the way. | Going on a summer holiday- How much will your holiday cost? Where can you stay? Will you choose a hotel or a campsite? How long will you stay? Is breakfast included? Create a price breakdown for your imaginary journey. |
A Journey Story. In class we are reading James and the Giant Peach because James goes on a journey in his peach. Think of any other film or story with a journey and write synopsis of the story/book for others. | Time Lines – create a timeline of famous events or happenings in your chosen country. Research the time difference between countries and compare a daily schedule, eg when we are getting up in the Uk the USA are … |
Creation – Research and/or create a traditional icon, mascot, item or thing from your chosen country. What is it used for? Where did it come from? | Creation – Create a showcase of foreign currency or roman numerals. |
