Perranporth School Newsletter 18th January 2013
Dear Parents/Carers
This week we welcome James in St Piran Class who has come all the way from Derbyshire.
St Piran Class had an excellent trip to Heartlands on Wednesday. Father Caspar took assembly and we had “Open the Book” assembly on Wednesday when bible stories are dramatised by volunteers from local churches.
Boscawen and Trengrouse Classes worked with artists to begin designing flags which will be used in the community. This is an exciting project which Mrs Smitheram is organising with local schools and community groups.
The Cross Country Event was enjoyed yesterday despite the cold and mud. Three pupil attended a “Gifted and Talented “ art event in Newquay.

A reminder from FOPS, that is the turn of St Piran Class to provide cakes for the sale on Friday 25th if you can please!

Our ICT advisor, Glyn Pascoe will be here as well as Miss Roberson and Mrs Ballinger to answer any questions and astound you with the latest updates!
FOPS (Friends of Perranporth)
The next meeting will be at 3.15p.m. on Monday 21st January in Miss Radcliffe’s classroom. Everyone welcome!
After School CLubs
Thank you to those who have paid up for this term! If not, we would appreciate the £10 as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we have had some behaviour issues from a few pupils already this week. This spoils the club for other pupils and staff so when this happens, we will have to refund money and cancel the club membership for the term.

HALF TERM 18th-22nd FEBRUARY
END OF TERM 28th MARCH
SUMMER TERM 14TH APRIL-19th JULY

Sickness Advice 18th December 2012
18th December 2012
Dear Parents/Carers,
As you may have heard there is extensive sickness in school. Yesterday, there were a considerable number of children absent after weekend sickness. However, so far, there have not been many ‘phone calls today so hopefully things are returning to normal.
Please do not send your child to school if he/she is complaining of stomach pains and do not return to school until 48hours from the last sickness.
We are being extra careful regarding hygiene to prevent further cases.
The Carol Service for Davy, Trengrouse and Trelawny Classes will now take place on Thursday at 2pm at St Michael’s Church. Hopefully most children will have recovered by then. Unfortunately, it cannot take place that evening as many children/families have prior commitments. It is our last chance of performing and I do apologise to those who cannot be there due to being at work.
Children can be dismissed from the Church so please will you ensure that your child knows whether they will be going straight home or whether they need to return to school with staff to wait to be collected from there. This is really important for their safety.
The Carolaire for Boscawen and Penhaligon Classes will be tomorrow evening at school as arranged.
The visits by Boscawen Class to the residential homes for the elderly have been cancelled.
I do hope you and your families keep well over Christmas and wish you all the best for 2013.
Regards,
Liz Martin

Perranporth School Newsletter 14th December 2012
Perranporth School Newsletter 14th December 2012
Dear Parents/Carers,
Last week the Cornish Dancers entertained the residents at Langholme Methodist Home in Falmouth and were very much appreciated. They looked so smart and were a credit to the school. Today they are at The Ponsmere Hotel to dance for “The Good Companions” at their Christmas lunch.
The choir performed at The Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening with Mrs Keast and had lots of compliments on their singing.
Ten children from Year 3 qnd 4 attended a Martial Arts event last week at Treviglas and congratulations to Megan in Year 3 who received a special medal.
The football team played against Cubert again this week with an excellent result of 6-2 to Perranporth.
The West Briton photographer is coming to the dress rehearsal of our Nativity Play today so look out for an article in the next edition.
LATENESS
A considerable number of pupils are regularly arriving very late in the morning which is a disruptive start to the day for the whole class. It also means that they are marked late on the register and the Education Welfare Officer needs to be informed of individuals when this is a continual problem.
GOVERNORS
Mr Andrew Bown has resigned from the Governing Body after many years. He was also Chair of FOPS for a considerable time and an ex pupil. Our thanks go to him for the time and support he has given to the school.
PERRANPORTH LANTERN PARADE tonight at 6.30.p.m. starting at Perran Bay.
Children from Boscawen and Trengrouse Classes have made lanterns and are welcome to use them
in the parade with their families.
SWIMMING POOL PROJECT
We are thrilled that a local couple who are getting married on 22nd December are donating their wedding gift money to the project. It is close to both of them as Rachel was one of the first children to use the newly built pool in the 60s and Joe’s late brother, Brian, was Head at the school for 19 years.
The committee of Perranporth Panto has generously agreed that any proceeds from the performances will go to the project. Many thanks also to “The Watering Hole” who are donating the proceeds from their raffle and choir night on 18th December . Please come and support them!
FOPS CHRISTMAS FAYRE
Don’t forget to come tomorrow at 10a.m. at The Memorial Hall and enjoy the various stalls and a visit form Father Christmas!
I hope you enjoy the various Christmas events and wish you all a very peaceful and happy time over the festive season! Thank you for your support during this busy term. I can’t believe another year has nearly passed by!
FUTURE DATES:
Monday 17th December Trengrouse, Trelawny and Davy Carol Service at St Michael’s Church. 6.30p,p.m.
Wednesday 19th December- School Christmas Lunch
Wednesday 19th December-Penhaligon and Boscawen Carolaire .6.p.m School Hall.

Perranporth Community Pool Project
Perranporth Community Pool Project
Here is an update of the project so far and how we are continuing to raise funds and progress. We feel there may have been some misunderstanding about parts of the project so hopefully this will help to clarify the process.
Our Aims.
Some of you will have seen the pool in its current state but many of you will not! It is unheated and getting very shabby. There is no disabled access so some of our friends will struggle to use the pool. The toilets and changing areas are tatty and we can only really use the pool when the sun is shining…which isn’t very often, if the last few years have been anything to go by! If you are in any doubt about how desperately this work needs doing, please ask to have a look at the pool and the surrounding area or talk to the children…they will tell you how cold it is.
Our aim is to
a) Refurbish and heat our pool using solar thermal energy, install new filtration system and automatic chemical dosing system. Retile the interior of the pool and install safety flooring.
b) Provide full disabled access to pool and surrounding area .
c) Enclose the site in a timber structure that will include new changing rooms, solar thermal showers and toilets. This will increase the length of the swimming season from at least April to end October, if not all year round (Currently it is only useable for 6 weeks in the summer.)
d) Landscape the surrounding grounds to make the area suitable for spectator seating and a picnic/recreational space. The school will be able to hold swimming galas which parents will be able to attend.
e) Open the facility to other schools, groups and the wider community. The pool will effectively be available to you at weekends and during school holidays. You could hold your child’s birthday party there or just attend any open swimming sessions we will hold.
We intend to offer free and low cost swimming where possible…this will truly be a community pool. Very few primary schools are lucky enough to have their own pool. Let’s not lose ours.
We are hoping to use local builders and tradesmen where possible so that the project will benefit our community in this way too. There is also the potential for employment opportunities when the project is completed.
Funding The Project.
We currently estimate that it will cost approx £110k to complete our “wish list” of improvements. We have raised approx £29k so far. This is amazing! FOPS will continue to support the project by holding cake sales, school fairs, quiz nights etc and we really need your continued support in this area. We are steadily raising over £50 a week just selling cakes and ice creams and it all helps. Some parents have held other events such as a fun run, zumba party, hair cut days and surf fun days…and we cannot thank you enough. If you have any ideas for an event you might like to run please let us know.
Jenny and Bec have been applying to lots of regional and national charities and foundations for extra funding. We have secured pledges of £5k from the council, £15k from Perranporth Gardens Charity, £1k from our Parish Council and many more. We will be applying to Sport England in the Spring for match funding (one of the National Lottery Funds) We are anxiously waiting to hear back from the 60 plus charities we have approached…so fingers crossed everyone!
It’s not too late to look at our video on www.peoplefund.it/perranporth-pool and ask your friends and family up country or on Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn etc to make a donation. Please post the link on the walls of your friends so they can see it too….thanks. The closing date for this is 27th November. If we ALL do this we may reach our target of £25k. (We have £1653 pledged so far by just 45 people)
We do appreciate that money is tight for everybody at the moment but be assured we are not expecting parents to pay for all the work.
Should we not be able to secure our full funding target we have made a contingency plan of work that needs to be done most urgently. This will include the heating and filtration system and the disabled access.
We have taken steps to ensure the project will be sustainable with minimal overheads for the school. The Friends of Perranporth School will continue to fund raise and support the pool in the years to come.
How Can I help?.
There are many ways!
- Buy or make some cakes on a Friday
- Come to the Christmas Fair (see school newsletter for dates)
- Look on People Fund It and share the link or make a pledge
- Mention our project to your friends and neighbours you never know who might like to help.
- Suggest or offer to run an event. (Just let us know and we’ll help you to advertise it and get support.)
- Do you have any contacts in the building trade, swimming pool trade etc that might be able to help?
We will continue to keep you up to date on developments by flyers, posters, the school newsletter and word of mouth. Soon, we will have a fantastic facility for us all to enjoy.
If you have any further questions, ideas or concerns about the project please talk to Bec or Jenny who can be found most days at pick up under the covered area. (Any member of FOPS will also be able to answer your questions or talk to Mrs Martin.)

Perranporth Primary School Swimming Pool Renovation
http://www.peoplefund.it/perranporth-pool/
I know I’ve been banging on about this for weeks but any small pledge to the project can make a difference. The swimming pool is in desparate need of work. The buildings are in an awful state and the water is always freezing.
From the efforts of a small team of parents over £31k has been raised already. More funders are still at the decision stage too. But and this is where you come in. And it’s all down to numbers.
We need lots of people to watch the video atwww.peoplefund.it/perranporth-pool and make a small pledge. It doesn’t have to be you making the pledge but you must forward this email on to as many of your contacts as possible. And ask them to do the same too. Loads and loads of people pledging small amounts can raise a lot of money just as efficiently as one very wealthy doner. In fact it’s even better as more people feel better for helping a good cause.
So please, please make the effort to pledge just a small amount and tell everyone else about this.
Thank you.
Robert Wiltshire
