Look at some of our home learning from this week . .

This Week

This week in English we began to explore the story of ‘Soggy to the Rescue’. In the next two weeks we will be writing our own rescue stories based on the structure of ‘Soggy to the Rescue’.  In Maths we have been learning about weight. We have been using balances and kitchen scales to weigh accurately.

Phonics

This week we have learnt the alternative pronunciations for ‘ea’, ‘er’, ‘ou’ and ‘y’. Next week we will be continuing with alternative pronunciations. We will be learning ‘ch’, ‘c’, ‘g’ and ‘ey’. Today your child will have brought home a phonics screening check from 2013 and other phonics resources in their book bag. Your child will need to segment and blend the alien words and real words accurately to pass the check. For more information about Phonics please arrange a time to come and see me. All parents are welcome to come and watch a Phonics session in action. Please see me to arrange a suitable day.

Home learning

This week we have been measuring weight. We have been comparing the weight of objects, measuring weight using cubes and weighing in grams. For home learning this week I would like the children to compare and order objects from around the home (toys, fruit, vegetables). The children can pretend that they are a human balance scale. Can they use their hands to tell which object is the heaviest? Can they order the objects from lightest to heaviest? Record by drawing and labelling the objects in your book. For an extra challenge find 4 or 5 food items labelled with the weight in grams (tins and packets are good for this). Compare the weights and order the objects from lightest to heaviest. This can be recorded by drawing and labelling the weights of the objects. You may like to involve children with measuring ingredients when cooking or baking this weekend.

This Week

This week in English we wrote our own seaside poetry. The children wrote imaginative poems including verbs and even some similes. In Maths we have been learning about money. We investigated how many ways we could make 6p and 7p. We found that it was easier to find all of the possibilities when we used an order. In Science we have been exploring shadows and making shadow puppets.

Phonics

This week we have learnt the alternative pronunciations for ‘o’, ‘u’, ‘ie’ and ‘ow. Next week we will be continuing with alternative pronunciations. We will be learning ‘ea’, ‘er’, ‘ou’ and ‘y’.

Home learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to draw/paint/collage their own picture of the sea. I would then like the children to record their own adjectives or wow words to describe the sea. For an extra challenge why not create your own sea similes or other similes and record them in your home learning books.

Support tips:

• Discuss the sea with your child.
• Talk about the sea during the story of the ‘Mousehole cat’ to help your child think about a stormy sea.
• Help your child sound out what they would like to write.

Science

In Science the children will be exploring light. Mrs Davis has asked if you have any spare small jam jars with lids or small plastic bottles could they be brought in please.

Phonics Workshop

Don’t forget to come along to the Phonics workshop on Monday after school to find out how you can support your child with their Phonics. Please note a crèche will be provided for the children by members of staff during the workshop.

This Week

This week in English we have been exploring sea poetry. Next week we will be learning a poem off by heart and writing our own sea poems. In Maths this week our learning has focussed on our number bonds. The children have been fantastic at recalling their number bonds to 10 quickly. In History we found out about Grace Darling and in Art & Design we made our own rescue pictures.

Phonics

This week we have revisited ‘u-e’ and learnt the alternative pronunciations for ‘a’, ‘e’ and ‘i’. Next week we will be continuing with alternative pronunciations. We will be learning about ‘o’, ‘u’, ‘ie’, and ‘ow’.

Home learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to complete the number bonds word problem sheets provided. The children have been great at solving word problems this week in Maths. For an extra challenge why not create and solve your own maths word problems.

Support tips:

• Encourage your child to read the word problem through slowly so that they understand what the problem is asking them to do.
• Make sure your child records how they worked the problem out and not just the answer.

Science

In Science next week the children will be exploring light. Mrs Davis has asked if you have any spare small jam jars with lids or small plastic bottles could they be brought in for Thursday next week.

Spare clothes

We are in need of spare school clothes particularly underwear in St Piran Class. Any donations would be gratefully received.

Superstar home learners

We really enjoyed our first football session with Dom the football coach. . . 

In Science with Mrs Davis we are learning about the sun. We used torches and balls to help us in our learning . . .

This Week

This week we have started out new topic ‘To the rescue’. In English we have been writing sentences about sea rescues using connectives. In Maths we have been revisiting place value and counting on in tens from any two digit number. In History this week we have discussed the differences between sea rescue in the past and in the present.

Phonics

This week we have revisited ‘a-e’, ‘i-e’, ‘e-e’ and ‘o-e’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘u-e’ and the alternative pronunciations for ‘a’, ‘e’, and ‘i’.

Home learning

This week we have started our new topic ‘to the rescue’. For home learning this week I would like the children to write about an Emergency service. Who are our Emergency services and how do they help us? For an extra challenge why not find out about Grace Darling.

Support tips:

• Talk to your child about what they would like to write about.
• Encourage your child to sound out what they would like to write.
• Ask your child to read their writing through to check it makes sense.

Phonics workshop

A Phonics workshop will be taking place on Monday the 25^th January after school in the school hall. Please come along to find out how to support your child with their Phonics. In June St Piran Class will be taking their Phonics screening check. The check involves the children segmenting and blending a mixture of real words and pseudo words (alien words, silly words or non-words) to check that they are at the expected level. Children who do not pass the Phonics Screening check will be expected to retake the check in year 2.

Football coach

On Friday mornings our class will be taking part in additional football sessions run by a Football Association qualified coach. Children will need their PE kits in school on Mondays, Wednesdays and also Friday mornings.

Clubs

After school and lunchtime clubs begin next week. Please make sure your child knows which clubs they attend and we will also remind children. Please let us know if they are not attending the club on a particular day.

This Week

This week we made our own Christmas cards. We also performed our fantastic nativity for the whole school and our families. Thank you to everyone who came to watch!

Home learning

For home learning over the Christmas holidays I have given each child the next 99 club challenge for them to try at home. The children are responding really well to the 99 club and particularly enjoy seeing if they can beat their own score from the previous time. The children are allowed ten minutes to complete the challenge and are encouraged to check their answers before the time runs out.

Support tips:

• Advise your child to check their answers through when they have finished.
• Remind your child that if they find one number sentence particularly tricky they can leave it out and come back to it later.
• Some of the challenges include multiplication number sentences. At this stage we are encouraging children to think of multiplication as ‘lots of’. So 2 x 5 would be two lots of five. Children are allowed to draw quick pictures or arrays to help them with any of the questions.

For extra home learning over the holidays use Mathletics, Phonics play and continue to read books at home regularly. For an extra challenge why not keep a diary over the Christmas holidays.

To the Rescue

Our first topic of this term is called ‘To The Rescue’. Within this unit the children will develop an understanding of the rescue services and in particular rescues at sea. We will be learning about Grace Darling in History, poetry in our English and art based on the sea and seashore in Art and Design. At the beginning of next term the children will be given spellings. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and will need to be practised at home. Spellings will be tested informally the following Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to practise their spellings in school. Spellings will always be linked to the phonics we are learning that week.

We made our own Advent wreaths this week  . . .

This Week

This week we have been learning about verbs in English. We have practised our counting forwards and backwards in Maths starting from two digit numbers. In Design & Technology we made our own Advent wreaths.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ew’, ‘oe’, ‘au’ and ‘ey’ phonemes. If you have any free time please practise words with these phonemes in with your child. Next week we will be learning the ‘a-e’, ‘e-e’, ‘i-e’, and ‘o-e’ phonemes you may wish to get a head start on these phonemes. Please let me know if you have lost your Phonics book from last year and would like a new one.

Home learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to complete the missing number sequences worksheet. As an extra challenge why not create your own number sequences or number sentences with numbers missing.

Support tips:

• Read the existing numbers in the number sequences with your child.
• Use an online hundred square to help show your child the existing numbers in the pattern.
• To find an interactive hundred square online search for splat square 100 in a search engine.

EYFS/ Year 1 Nativity

Please can all children have their costumes in school in a named bag on their peg by Friday the 11^th December at the latest. Our EYFS/ year 1 Nativity is on Wednesday the 16^th December and will start at 2pm.

Christmas cards

We have a post box in our classroom for children to post their Christmas cards in. Class lists of names are available. If you would like one please ask.
