This Week

This week in our English we continued with our Sensory trail leaflets and focussed on adding adjectives to our writing. In Maths we have been learning about measurement and weight. We made our own blueberry flapjacks using a recipe from ‘I can cook’ and weighed the ingredients with Miss Dix. In Science we carried out a senses investigation. We investigated whether we could identify mini-beasts using our sense of touch, whether we could identify who was talking using our sense of hearing and whether we could spot which item was missing during ‘Kim’s game’.

Phonics

This week we have learnt the alternative spellings for ‘ie’, ‘ea’ and ‘ir’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘ue’, ‘au’ and ‘aw’.

Home Learning

For your home learning I would like you to write about something you have done this weekend or a previous weekend. For example you might have gone to the park or to the beach or attended a birthday party. I would like everyone to write at least one sentence. Don’t forget your capital letters, full stops, sounding out and adjectives. As an extra challenge write a diary entry about one event which took place during the weekend.

Support tips:

• A recount is a type of text which re-tells an event. It is written in the first person and in the past tense.
• Events should be written about in chronological order.
• Help your child to read through their own writing to spot their own mistakes.
• g. First I went to the swimming pool. Then I got changed. After that I got into the pool and had my swimming lesson.

Miss Dix

Unfortunately after half term Miss Dix will no longer be working at Perranporth School.  We will all miss her and wish her all the best for the future.

This Week

This week we have been practising our counting skills in Maths. In particular we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and applying these skills to problem solving. In English we have continued our poetry topic and the children wrote their own brilliant senses poems with alliteration.  Our focus for PE this week has been preparing for the Sports day events. Please note Sports day is on Wednesday 25^th May and begins at 1:30pm.

This week we have learnt the alternative spellings for ‘ar’, ‘or’ and ‘or’. Next week we will be revisiting the alternative spellings for ‘ow’, ‘oi’ and ‘ear’.

Home Learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to practise their multiplication skills. Children either need to practise counting in 10s, to complete the multiplication wheel or to solve the multiplication word problems. For an extra challenge why not draw your own sets or arrays to show other times tables.

Support tips:

• We have been using our fingers to count in 10s, 2s, and 5s, this week.
• We have also been referring to multiplication as ‘lots of’ so rather than saying 2 multiplied or times by 2 we have been saying 2 lots of 2 is 4.
• Drawing sets/ arrays has also helped the children with their multiplication this week. Please see the pictures below.

This Week

This week we continued exploring our new topic Brilliant Bodies. In English we have been learning about senses poetry and we learnt a song about our senses.  Our learning in Maths has continued with Place Value. We have been using shapes and objects to represent numbers and cracking codes to work out the hidden value of shapes. We have also been revisiting most, least, more than and less than, and using them in sentences. Yesterday we went down to the beach to create our own beach art. The children made some excellent pieces of art and were great ambassadors for our class and our school.

Home Learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to write their own senses poem of their choice. They might like to use our recent beach trip for inspiration and write a beach senses poem, or perhaps they would like to write a forest based senses poem. For an extra challenge include adjectives, alliteration and similes in your poem.

Support tips:

• Discuss the five senses with your child.
• Help them decide where they would like to set their poem.
• Use the sentence starters below.
• Encourage your child to sound out when spelling.

This Week

This week we have started our new topic ‘Brilliant Bodies’. In English we have been learning about the story ‘Funnybones’ and writing our own book reviews. In Maths we have focussed on place value this week. We have been making and ordering two digit numbers and solving number word problems. On Tuesday we had our first Forrest School session and used clay to make creatures and faces.

This week we have learnt the alternative spellings for ‘oa’ and ‘oo’. Next week we will be revisiting the alternative spellings for ‘sh’, ‘ai’ and ‘igh’.

Home learning

To consolidate our Maths learning, this week’s home learning is based on place value. Children either need to order the single digit and two digit numbers or solve the number based word problems provided. For extra home learning this week log on to Mathletics to access the place value activities which I have set. Please note your child has a new Mathletics password in their home learning book. For an extra challenge give your child clues about a number and ask them to tell you which number you are describing. For example, this number has two digits and has 3 tens in it. It is less than 39 but more than 35. This number is even. This number is one less than 37.

Support tips:

• Use counters or other objects to help your child see the numbers and understand their value.
• Help your child read the question carefully.
• Encourage your child to check through their activities.

Forest School and PE kit reminder

Please remember that all children need to bring in a clothes, footwear and waterproofs for our forest school sessions. Please be aware that these clothes may get dirty. All children need a full PE kit in school for our PE lessons which take place on a Monday and a Wednesday. We will continue to go outside for our PE lessons and children need either plimsolls or trainers for our lessons.

After school Clubs

After school clubs start next week. Please make sure your child knows which clubs they are going to.

We dressed up in our sporty clothes today to raise money for sports relief. We ran and walked 12 laps of the field which is 1 mile ! Well done St Piran !

This Week

This week we have looked at the story ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ in our English and created our own plant hunt poems. In Maths we have been learning about Place Value. We have been making two digit numbers using physical resources, breaking down numbers into tens and units, and matching numerals to number names. In PE we have been developing our ball skills and in Art & Design we made our own flower sculptures.

This week we have learnt the alternative spellings for ‘oo’, ‘ai’, ‘ay’ and ‘a-e’. Next week we will continue to look at alternative spellings. We will be focussing on ‘ee’, ‘y’, ‘ey’, ‘igh’ and i-e’.

Home learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to consolidate their learning on numbers represented by numerals and number names. Children either need to match numbers to their number names or they need to write the number name next to the two digit number. For an extra challenge say a two digit or three digit number and ask your child to write down the number name in words.

Support tips:

• Encourage your child to use their phonics to help them sound out names of numbers.
• Discuss the difference between the teens numbers and the tens numbers and why we need to be clear when we are saying them. E.g. seventeen and seventy.

Forest School

During the first half of the Summer term we will be taking part in forest school based outdoor activities on a Tuesday afternoon in the environmental area. Kelly Jeffs will be leading the sessions along with Mr Barnes and myself. These sessions will help the children to develop their communication, team building skills and provide the opportunity to learn using the outdoors. All children will need a spare change of clothes including sturdy footwear ( no sandals or open toe footwear please) and full waterproofs if possible.

This Week

This week we have written our own ‘Gingerbread man’ based story in our special write. All of the children wrote fantastic stories and Miss Dix and I were very impressed by their writing. In Maths this week we have been using number lines to add on. We have also been challenging ourselves to add on two digit numbers on a number line. We have learnt how to add the tens first and then the units. In Science we are currently carrying out a Science experiment to see what cress needs to grow. In SEAL this week the children made their own worry dolls with Mrs Davies and shared their worries.

This week we have learnt the alternative spellings for ‘ur’ and ‘or’ . Next week we will continue to look at alternative spellings. We will be focussing on ‘oo’ and ‘ai’, ‘ay’ and ‘a-e’.

Home learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to write at least one sentence about their favourite plant or flower. We went on a plant hunt last week and saw Daffodils, Primroses and Daisies. Ask your child to explain why they have chosen their flower or plant. The children can then draw a picture of their favourite plant or flower.  For an extra challenge research other plants or flowers and write about them.

Support tips:

• Talk to your child about their favourite plant and flower.
• Discuss what might be a good reason for choosing a favourite flower e.g. I like Daffodils because they are bright and yellow.
• Use your phonics book to help your child find the correct grapheme.

Lunchtime drinks

Drinks are available for the children to buy at lunchtime. Orange juice and apple juice are 25p. Chocolate, strawberry and banana milk are available for 35p. Please note children can pay weekly or daily for these drinks at the school kitchen.

This Week

This week we have been learning about multiplication in our Maths. The children have been excellent at making sets to show the multiplication facts. In English we have continued our study of ‘Soggy to the rescue’ and made our own freeze frames to retell the story. We created our own flotilla collages in Art & Design this week and started to use our handwriting books to practise our letters.

Phonics

This week we have learnt the alternative pronunciations for ‘ch’, ‘c’, ‘g’ and ‘ey’. Next week we will be beginning to look at alternative spellings. We will be learning ‘j’, ‘m’, and ‘n’.

Home learning

This week in English we have been learning all about the story ‘Soggy to the Rescue’. This story is about a boy called Jack, his Grandfather and a stolen teddy bear. Set in St Ives, the story tells of how Patrick the teddy bear is stolen by a sea gull.  Soggy, another teddy bear, is harnessed to a kite and with the help of Jack manages to save Soggy.  For homework this week I would like the children to write about their favourite part of the story and explain why. For example ‘My favourite part of the story is when the school children help to look for Patrick because I would like to help in the search for a missing bear.’ For an extra challenge why not write your own adventure story where a character is stolen.

Support tips:

• Talk to your child about the story.
• Discuss their favourite part.
• Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
• Encourage your child to rehearse their sentence before writing it down.

Special Write

Next week we will be writing our own rescue stories based on Soggy to the rescue in our Special Write on Wednesday.  The children will be using their own ‘baddy’ character and changing how Patrick is rescued at the end of the story. The children are well prepared for this but it may help them if you discuss their story ideas with them.
