St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 24th February
This week we have been learning about multiplication and division in our Maths. The children have been making arrays using counters and using their own pictures to help them solve number sentences. . In our English we have started to learn the story of The Gingerbread man. The children have been brilliant at making their own actions.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about the alternative pronunciations of ‘j’, ‘m’ and ‘n’. Next week we will be learning ‘r’, ‘s’ and ‘z’.
Home Learning
This week in Maths we have been focussing on Multiplication. In Year 1 we learn to count in 2s. 5s and 10s. For home learning this week I would like the children to either count the 2p coins in 2s or complete the word problems. For extra home learning this week why not have a go at making arrays to solve multiplication number sentences or make your own story map for the ‘Gingerbread man’.
Support tips:
- Discuss the numbers that we say when we count in 2s and record these with your child.
- Encourage your child to read the word problem carefully and discuss which calculation they need to use to solve it.
- Make arrays to help solve multiplication number sentences.

This week we have been learning about measuring in our Maths. The children have been measuring using cubes and are beginning to measure and record in cm. In our English we wrote our own rescue stories. We have been very impressed with the children’s imaginative writing.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about the alternative pronunciations of ‘g’, ‘c’ and ‘ey’. After half term we will be learning the alternative pronunciations of ‘j’, ‘m’ and ‘n’.
Home Learning
This week in English we have been learning all about the story ‘Soggy to the Rescue’. This story is about a boy called Jack, his Grandfather and a stolen teddy bear. Set in St Ives, the story tells of how Patrick the teddy bear is stolen by a sea gull. Soggy, another teddy bear, is harnessed to a kite and with the help of Jack manages to save Soggy. For homework this week I would like the children to draw a picture of their favourite character from the story. Then I would like the children to write words about the character around them. For example you might choose the seagull and write naughty, unkind, huge, around your picture. As an extra challenge your child might like to have a go at writing why they have chosen the character. For example, I like Soggy because he is brave.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about the story.
- Discuss their favourite character and adjectives they could use to describe them.
- Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
For optional extra home learning activities over the half term read regularly, practise addition/subtraction number sentences and word problems, keep a diary of your holiday or write your own rescue story.
Mrs Barbery
Unfortunately we say goodbye to Mrs Barbery at the end of this week. She has been a fantastic support to the children and we will all miss her and wish her good luck in the future.

A visit from our class Governor
Class governor visit.
On my recent visit to St Piran class I was very interested to see the children demonstrating their developing skills in addition and subtraction. The governors are supporting the current school focus on raising mathematical standards across the school. It was clear to see children were using a range of strategies to help them solve the calculations, it was also clear that children were using their number knowledge to help them e.g. counting in twos is quicker than counting every one!!
It was good to see so many children enjoying mathematics and for those who were finding it a bit more of a challenge you could see their determination to persevere and some enjoyment from the achievement. This also reflects the current support from governors on developing successful learners through Building Learning Power. It was a most enjoyable morning and I am looking forward to my next visit.

This week we have been continuing our Maths learning on Time. The children have been matching times on clocks to times in words. In English we wrote about our weekends and have started looking at Sea poetry. In History we have been comparing Sea rescue in the past and sea rescue in the present day.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about ‘a-e’, ‘i-e’, ‘o-e’, and ‘e-e’. Next week we will be learning about alternative pronunciations of ‘a’, ‘e’, and ‘i’.
Home Learning
We have started our new topic ‘to the rescue’. For home learning this week I would like the children to write about an Emergency service don’t forget to include pictures and photos. For extra home learning this week why not find out about Grace Darling.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about what they would like to write about.
- Encourage your child to sound out what they would like to write.
- Ask your child to read their writing through to check it makes sense.

St Piran Class Newsletter- 6th January 2017
This week we have started our new sea rescue topic. The children have explored the differences between sea side rescue in the past and the present in History. In Computing they practised their typing skills. In PE we started our gymnastics topic.
Phonics
This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been revisiting tricky words, (specific words which can’t be ‘sounded’ out) and started learning about split digraphs (phonemes that are split by a consonant. In the word cake, the ‘a’ and the ‘e’ are working together to make the ‘a-e’ sound. Your child has brought home a spellings book today in their book bag. In their book there are 10 spellings that they need to practise for the following week. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and will need to be practised at home. Spellings will be tested informally the following Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to practise their spellings in school. Spellings will always be linked to the phonics we are learning that week.
Home Learning
For home learning this week children need to read the time underneath the clock face and draw the time onto the clock face. For other time home learning activities this week make your own clock, practise telling the time using a clock or a watch, or use the Mathletics time activities to practise your time telling skills.
Support tips:
- Use an analogue clock or a watch to practise reading and making different times with your child.
- Encourage your child to use the appropriate vocabulary, e.g. hand, hour, minute.

St piran Newsletter Friday 16th December
This week we have been writing letters to Father Christmas and performing our Nativity play.
Phonics
This term in our Phonics we have been re-capping Phase 3 of our Phonics. In the past few weeks we have learnt the new phonemes for phase 5. There are some excellent free games on Phonics Play to help your child practise their Phonics.
Home Learning
For home learning this Christmas I would like the children to write about an event which has happened in their Christmas holidays. They might like to write about their Christmas day and their favourite present. They might like to write about something special they did in the holidays.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about what they would like to write about.
- Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
- Remind your child that every sentence needs to begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
Below are some other optional activities children may like to complete during the holidays.
Extra activities:
- Share books at home with an adult or an older sibling.
- Practise letter and number formation.
- Complete number sentences using tap and unwrap or drawing their own pictures for support.
- Spellings and phonics practise. Say a word with a sound in, ask your child to segment the sounds in the word out loud and then write the word down.
- Write/type sentences or stories. Encourage your child to rehearse what they want to say out loud before writing it down or typing.
- Keep a diary of your holidays.
- Log on to Mathletics to practise Maths activities.
To the Rescue
Our first topic of next term is called ‘To The Rescue’. Within this unit the children will develop an understanding of the rescue services and in particular rescues at sea. We will be learning about Grace Darling in History, poetry in our English and art based on the sea and seashore in Art and Design. At the beginning of next term the children will be given spellings. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and will need to be practised at home. Spellings will be tested informally the following Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to practise their spellings in school. Spellings will always be linked to the phonics we are learning that week.
