Penhaligon Newsletter 19th June 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we had a fantastic trip to the beach.  Thank you to all the parents who were able to come with us.  Thanks also go to Perranporth Gardens Charities who kindly lent us their beach wheelchairs.  We all had a really good time making beach art and we have used the trip as inspiration for acrostic poems about Chapel Rock later in the week.

In computing this week, we have learnt how to make a block chart using the information we collected on last week’s bug hunt.

In our topic work, we have begun to build our carnival float and have painted some beautiful parrots, as well as continuing to create our carnival masks. We have also learnt more about Brazil.

We will continue to swim on Monday and Friday so please ensure that your child has their swimming kit in school on those days.

If you have any questions, please drop in to see either of us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .

Thank you.

Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Penhaligon Newsletter 12th June 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for all the cardboard boxes which have been sent in.  We will begin constructing our carnival floats shortly!

In our topic work, we have begun to look at Brazil and have written a list of things we would like to find out about the country.  We were really impressed with the children’s questions, e.g. Does the rain make it cold at the equator? And Who was the first person to go into the Amazonian rainforest? We will begin our research on these questions and more next week.

On Wednesday, we spent the whole morning outside – firstly using the environment as inspiration for our poems with similes, and then working in the Environmental Area creating miniature adventure courses for woodlice!  The children all worked very hard.

We will continue to swim on Mondays and Fridays, so please ensure your child has swimsuit and towel with them on those days.

This Wednesday, we will have our first trip to the beach.  Your child has a letter with a tear off slip which needs to be returned as soon as possible – we would really like some parent volunteers to accompany us, so if you would like to join us, please let either of us know, thank you.

As always, if you have any questions, please drop in to see us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .

Thank you.

Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Penhaligon Newsletter 22nd May 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

Sports Day
Thank you to everyone who managed to come and watch our Sports Day. I am sure you will agree that all the children competed brilliantly and everyone had a lovely time. There are photos on the Penhaligon Class Blog.

Britain or Brazil?
Next term our topic will be ‘Britain or Brazil?’ As part of this topic, we will be making carnival costumes and we will attempt a carnival float! We would be very grateful of any donations of large boxes and collage materials that you may have. Please bring them in after the half term holiday.

Outdoor School Sessions
On Wednesday mornings next half term, we will be running Outdoor School sessions. These will take part on the beach when the tide allows and on days when this is not possible, we will do a Forest School activity in the Environmental Area. Your child will need to be in suitable clothes, e.g. sun hat, sun cream, warm coat, wellies and be prepared to be working outside whatever the weather. We will need a few extra adults to help and will put up a sheet for willing volunteers to sign up on after half term.

Swimming
Next half term will have swimming lessons on Monday and Friday. We still do the lessons even if it is a bit drizzly so please ensure that your child has their kit every Monday and Friday even if it’s not sunny! They need a one piece swim suit and a towel. If your child will be using goggles, please send a note confirming that you want them to wear their goggles. Please ensure that all kit and uniform is clearly named.

SATS
The children have done their writing SATS this week, we will administer the reading and Maths SATS after half term and their final assessments will be on their reports which you will receive in July.

Head lice
Sorry to finish my newsletter like this, but we have had a case of head lice reported this morning. Could you please check your child’s hair for any lice over the holidays, thank you!

Have a lovely break and we will see you back here on Tuesday 2nd June (Monday is a staff training day.)

Thank you.

Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Penhaligon Newsletter
15th May 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a busy week working on our Sowing and Growing topic, making fruit out of whicker and paper, learning to multiply and divide, and continuing our study of The Wind in the Willows.

Sports Day
Don’t forget Key Stage 1 Sports Day will be on Thursday 21st May at 2pm on the field. We hope you can all make it.

SATS
We will be carrying out our Writing SATS next week. In Key Stage 1, we keep it as low key as possible. The children will do 2 written tasks on 2 different days. They will be sitting in our classroom and it will be very like the Big Writes which the children have been doing all year. We try our hardest to ensure the children do not get stressed about the tests. The test itself is only part of our assessment, and the final grade will take into account work carried out in the course of lessons as well. We will do the reading and maths tests after term. If you have any questions, please come in to see either of us.

Swimming
After half term, our PE lessons will take place in the school swimming pool! Our sessions will be on Monday and Friday so please ensure that your child has their costume (no bikinis, please) and towel in school every Monday and Thursday. As always, please ensure their kit is labelled.

Thank you.

Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Penhaligon Newsletter
8th May 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we have been finding out about seed dispersal. The children looked around the school grounds and sketched different plants and their seeds, e.g. dandelions.

We have continued reading The Wind in the Willows. The children have been thinking about how different characters might be feeling at different parts of the story and have been very insightful in their ideas.

In Maths, we have been looking at the properties of different 2d and 3d shapes. Can your child show you a cuboid, a cube or a sphere? Can they show you the faces, edges and vertices? We have also practised telling the time.

In our topic work, we have been looking at the weather and can name four different types of cloud.

Please remember Sports Day is on Thursday 21st May at 2pm on the school field.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to drop in to see us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.

Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.
