This Week
This week in Maths we have continued with our time topic. We have been learning about the days of the week and months of the year. In English we have been continuing with our Non-Fiction learning and using Non-Fiction books to find interesting facts. The children started to write their own Non-Fiction animal reports.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘sh’, ‘oo’ and ‘oa’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘igh’, ‘ee’ and ‘ai’. Please note spellings this week are linked to the common exception words. These are words that the children need to be able to read and spell which don’t follow our Phonics rules.
Home learning
For Home learning this week I would like the children to complete the days of the week and months of the year activities. For an extra challenge why not find out about something that happens in one month of the year.
Support Tips:
- Sort the days of the week and months of the year into the correct order first.
- Repeat the order so that your child can repeat it with you.
Transition Meetings
Please remember to come along to your meeting with Mr Howes next week. These meetings will provide the opportunity to discuss targets for next year and discuss individual needs. The appointment times are outside our classroom door in case you need a reminder.

This Week
This week in Maths we have continued with our time topic. We have been learning about the days of the week and months of the year. Please note spellings this week are linked to our Maths learning rather than our Phonics. The children have learnt a new days of the week song. In English we have been continuing with our Non-Fiction learning and using Non-Fiction books to find interesting facts and sorting sentences into Fiction and Non-Fiction.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘ie’, ‘ou’ and ‘ay’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘sh’, ‘oo’ and ‘oa’.
Home learning
For home learning this week I would like the children to write at least one sentence about their favourite animal. Ask your child to explain why they have chosen their animal. The children can then make their own model or draw a picture of their favourite animal. For an extra challenge research an animal and write down the key facts about them.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about their favourite animal.
- Help your child to use the National Geographic Kids website to research animal facts.
Many thanks

Our Zoo trip
On Tuesday this week we were lucky enough to visit Newquay Zoo! The children were a credit to the school and had a fantastic day learning about many animals.

This Week
This week we went to Newquay Zoo. The children had an excellent time and got to see many different animals. In our workshop we got to find out more about hissing cockroaches, African land snails and millipedes. Please visit our class blog to see more photos of our visit. In Maths this week we have been revisiting time and learning how to tell the time and to draw the time on to clock faces.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘ir’, ‘oy’ and ‘ea’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘ie’, ‘ou’ and ‘ay’.
Home learning
For Home Learning this week I would like the children to practise reading the time and then drawing the time on the sheet provided. For an extra challenge why not practise quarter past and quarter to times on a clock face or using a real clock.
Support tips:
- Use a real clock or watch to help children see the difference between the two hands.
- In the classroom the children have learnt that the long hand is for minutes and the short hand is for hours.
Many thanks

This Week
This week we have started out new topic ‘Animal Allsorts’. Within this topic we will be learning all about animals and how to sort them into different criteria. In Maths this week our focus has been money. In Design and Technology the children began to investigate puppets in preparation for making their own animal puppet.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘ew’, ‘oe’ and ‘ph’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘wh’, ‘aw’ and ‘ue’. The Phonics Screening check will take place next week. The children will be asked to read 20 real words and 20 nonsense words with me in the meeting room.
Home Learning
Our home learning this week is a money activity. The children need to find ways of making 10p or find ways of making 50p. They then need to record the ways they found in their book. They can record this home learning by drawing the coins or by just writing the value of the coins. For an extra challenge why not try solving this problem. Rosie went into the sweet shop with 10p to spend. There were chews for 2p, mini eggs for 3p, Chocko bars for 5p and lollypops for 7p. What could she buy if she wanted to spend all her money?
Pet/animal photos
To show our love of animals we have started to make a collection of pet and animal photos on our display. If your child would like to add to our collection please bring in a photo or drawing and we will add it to our display. Please feel free to email photos of the children with their pets or with animals to the address below and I can print them.
Design and Technology
As part of their learning within Design and Technology this half term the children will be making their own animal puppets. To help the children practise their sewing Mrs Davis has asked if children could bring in an old sock for them to practise on. Please could socks be brought in by Thursday 23rd June.
Many thanks

This Week
The highlight of our week has been Sports Day. The children all completed their chosen events with smiles on their faces and enjoyed the fun filled afternoon. Thank you for everyone who came along. It was fantastic to hear so many cheering the children on.
Phonics
This week we have revisited ‘ue’, ‘au’ and ‘aw’. After Half Term we will be revisiting ‘oe’, ‘ew’ and ‘ph’. The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check will take place in the second week after Half Term. The children will asked to read 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The check will take up to ten minutes and will be conducted by myself on a one to one basis in the meeting room. I have explained to the children that they will all be reading real words and alien words with me in the meeting room but do not wish to worry the children about the check. All children have read real words and nonsense words with me previously which means that the check should not cause the children any distress.
Home Learning
For Home Learning over the holiday I would like the children to practise their Phonics. Children need to be able to recognise all of the Phonemes in phase 2, 3, and 5 and also be able to segment and blend them in words accurately. I have included some real and alien words in their Home Learning books to practise with and also the Phase 5 Phonemes. http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ The website ‘Phonics play’ has some excellent games for practising segmenting and blending real words and alien words. Please also use the Phonics Books the children brought home in Trevithick. For an extra challenge why not keep a diary of your Half Term.
Support tips:
- Encourage your child to teach you the action for the Phoneme.
- Play Phonics hangman using sound buttons. (Sound buttons are used during Phonics sessions. They help the children to see how many Phonemes are in each word. Your child should be able to show you what sound buttons are and how they are used)
- Use a timer to write down as many words as you can using a specific Phoneme.
Many thanks
