St Piran Class Newsletter
St Piran Class Newsletter- 7th October 2016
This week in English we have been writing labels and captions. The children wrote some excellent labels and captions for fairy tale items. In Maths we have been adding two single digit numbers together and in Art and Design we started to make our wolf masks.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have revisited ‘ai’, ‘ee’, ‘igh’ and ‘oa’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘oo’, ‘ar’ ‘or’ and ‘ur’.
Home Learning
This week in our Maths we have been learning all about addition. For Home Learning this week I would like the children to solve the following addition number sentences. For extra home learning this week have a go at making your own addition machine (please see picture to the right) or adding single digit numbers to two digit numbers. E.g. 44 + 9 =
Support tips:
- This week we have been exploring strategies that we can use to help us solve addition calculations. The children have been using their fingers, adding on using a number line, making two groups using objects and counting how many objects there are altogether, and using tap and unwrap (a mental maths strategy which the children should be able to show you).
- Talk to your child about how they would like to solve the number sentences.
- Use household objects to represent the numbers if they would like to make two groups of objects.
- Encourage your child to check that their numerals are formed correctly.
Junk Modelling
On Tuesday the children will be constructing their own houses in DT with Mrs Davis. If you have any spare clean junk modelling materials such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, yoghurt pots, plastic bottles etc. we would be grateful.
Harvest Festival
On Thursday the 20th October we will be celebrating Harvest by having a Harvest Festival with Trevithick class at St Michael’s Church in Perranporth. (9:45 start) We will be walking the children down and back to the church. We ask the children to bring in a contribution to our donation to the local foodbank. Suitable items include tins of fruits, vegetables, soups, packets of rice, pasta and biscuits. (No nuts please) Thanks in advance for you donations. Looking forward to seeing you at the celebration.
Dates for your Diary and Reminders
We are a nut free school. We kindly ask that children do not bring in nuts or obvious nut products as part of their snack or lunches.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 30th September
This week in English we wrote our own stories. The children used their imaginations and wrote some excellent stories. In Maths we have been counting in 2s and learning how to multiply by making groups. In gymnastics we explored different ways of travelling along apparatus and in Geography we made our own maps with keys.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have revisited ‘sh’, ‘th’, and ‘ng’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘ai’, ‘ee’ ‘igh’ and ‘oa’.
Home Learning
This week in English we have been writing our own versions of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. The children have used their imaginations and created some excellent stories. For home learning this week I would like the children to write or draw their favourite fairy tale. For extra home learning why not create your own fairy tale and record it in pictures or words.
Support tips:
- Talk to your child about their favourite fairy tale and what happens in the story. Ask them to explain why it is their favourite.
- Help your child rehearse their sentence out loud before writing it down. They can use the sentence starter ‘My favourite fairy tale is’.
- Please encourage your child to sound out words that they would like to use and to be resourceful like one of our BLP animals ‘Justin Beaver’. Can they be resourceful and find the word they are trying to spell in the book.
- Remind your child to hold their pencil correctly when forming their letters and ask them to check that they have remembered their capital letters and full stops in their writing.
99 Club
We made our first attempts at the 99 Club this week. The 99 club has been developed to help raise standards in Numeracy by encouraging pupils to improve their mental maths and therefore increase the speed and confidence .The children have a certain number of number sentences to complete in 10 minutes. The 11 club includes number sentences involving addition to 10, the 22 club includes number sentences involving addition to 20 and the 33 club includes both of these and number sentences involving 2x table, 10x and addition number sentences. In year 1 we will be completing the challenge once a week and all pupils start on the 11 club and work their way up. Please see me if you would like advice on how to practise with your child.
Dates for your Diary and Reminders

This Week
This week in English we have been learning about labels and captions. We went to the storytelling area and wrote our own labels and captions for things we could see on the building site. In Science we continued our learning on Materials. We discussed different materials we saw on the building site and what they were being used for.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have revisited ‘z’, ‘y’, ‘qu’ and ‘ch’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘sh’, ‘th’ ‘ng’ and ‘ai’.
Hearing check
On Wednesday 28th September members of St Piran Class will be having a hearing check. Please contact the office if you have any further questions or concerns about the hearing test.
Home Learning
This week in our Maths we have been continuing our learning on Place Value. For home learning this week I would the children to read the number and then complete one more and one less than the number. For extra home learning this weekend find one more and one less for two digit numbers.
Support tips:
- Draw a number line to remind children of the order of numbers from 1-10.
- Use objects (colouring pencils, counters, teddies) to make amounts to show children the number and the number that is one more and one less.
- Use a search engine to search for 100 splat square which is an interactive 100 square that we use in class, the children love using this. Numbers can be marked off in different colours which helps the children with the order of numbers.
Chartwells parent lunch
KS1 parents are invited to have lunch at school on Tuesday the 4th October. More information to follow.

This Week
This week in our English we have continued with learning to retell the story of ‘The three little pigs’. We went into the storytelling area and made our own freeze frames of key parts of the story. In our Maths we have been practising counting forwards and backwards in ones starting from any number up to 20. We have also been learning how to read and write numbers as words. In our PE we have started our Gymnastics and we shared our ‘All about me bags with Mrs Davis.
Phonics
This week in Phonics we have revisited ‘j’, ‘v’, ‘x’ and ‘w’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘y’, ‘z’ ‘qu’ and ‘ch’.
Wow Moments
In St Piran Class we continue to celebrate wow moments. These can be put on the whiteboard in the morning and they will be shared later that day and put into the children’s Learning Adventure Books.
Home Learning
This week in English we have been exploring the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and in Science we have begun our learning on Materials. For home learning this week I would like the children to design their dream house. Their houses can be as creative as they like. Perhaps they would like a slide from their bedroom to the garden or a swimming pool in the roof. The children need to draw their dream house and then label it. For extra home learning this week why not make a model of your dream house from junk modelling or lego, or write sentences describing your dream house.
Support tips:
- Talk about what kind of things the children would like on their imaginative design.
- Please encourage your child to write at least one label on their own. If your child finds writing particularly challenging perhaps take it in turns to write the labels or ask for their help with the sounding out of words as you write. In the classroom if the children ask how to spell a word we encourage them to sound it out rather than writing it for them as much as possible.
- Remind your child to hold their pencil correctly when forming their letters.

Meet the teacher information
Please find below information from the ‘Meet the teacher’ sessions.
The inspire curriculum
Perranporth School are using the Inspire curriculum to meet the targets set in the New Curriculum.
The Inspire Curriculum is a topic based approach to learning which means that the majority of lessons taught will fit into the topic. At the moment our topic is ‘The Big Build’. In English we have been learning the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’, in Science we have been learning about materials, in art and design we are designing Native American wolf masks . . .
Each topic lasts a half term our next topic is called ‘Let’s Celebrate’ and will allow children to explore different celebrations.
Our learning for each topic will be presented in our Learning Adventure books similar to the EYFS learning journey.
Reading
It is important that children are reading at home for at least 10 minutes daily, little and often is the best approach.
Reading books will be changed at least once a week in School but if your child has finished their book or they are particularly not enjoying it please feel free to change it before in the morning.
When you have read with your child please leave a comment in their reading record so that their progress can be monitored and any issues or concerns can be addressed.
Please encourage your child to sound out a word when they don’t know a word. Then if the word is not phonetically decodable talk about words it sounds a bit like, or words that would fit into the sentence to make sense.
Phonics
Phonics is about children knowing how letters link to sounds.
Children use Phonics in their reading and their writing.
Children learn the sounds (phonemes) and how to write them down (graphemes.
Children learn which sound is represented by which letter and that a sound can be represented by more than one letter.
In our Phonics lessons we learn to sound out the sounds how to blend sounds, how to read and write sounds.
Phonics sessions are fast and pacy.
Please encourage your child to sound out when they are writing and reading.
There is a Phonics Workshop taking place on Thursday the 13th October at 3:30pm
Spellings
After Christmas your child will bring home weekly spellings in their Spellings Book.
If you wish to practise spelling with your child please use the high frequency words and tricky words from our Phonics sessions.
Home-learning
Daily reading.
Every Friday I will set either a numeracy or a literacy based home-learning activity.
The activity will always be linked to our learning that week. E.g. Addition in maths.
The home-learning is explained to the children but they will need support to complete it.
I will provide suggestions of how to support your child with their homework.
The activity itself should not take longer than 20 minutes to complete.
Home-learning is due in by Wednesday.
Targets
Your child is set targets for writing, reading and maths.
Targets will be short term and achievable.
Staff
Mrs Green
Miss Hendra
Mrs Harding
Mrs Thipthorp
On Tuesday afternoons I am out of the classroom on my scheduled non-teaching time. Mrs Davis will be teaching the children.
Intervention
Please don’t be worried if your child says they are having intervention.
We are providing intervention for children based on their learning and groups change frequently.
Uniform and PE kits
Please make sure that all of your child’s uniform is named.
As the weather begins to change children are allowed to wear dark tracksuit bottoms or leggings for PE.
Please make sure your child has either plimsolls or trainers for PE.
I will send PE kits home to be washed every half term.

St Piran Weekly Newsletter 9th September
Welcome back!
Welcome back! We hope that you all enjoyed the Summer break and are ready for a new school year. The children have settled in well to St Piran Class this week and have enjoyed exploring their new classroom.
Meet the teacher
On Wednesday the 14th of September at 3:30pm and 5pm we are holding meet the teacher sessions at the School. Our session will take place in St Piran Classroom. Please come along to find out a bit more about what your children will be learning about this year and our routine in St Piran Class. If you are unable to attend either of these sessions please see me to arrange a meeting at a more convenient time.
Mrs Davis
Mrs Davis will be teaching the class on a Tuesday afternoon whilst I am on my scheduled time out of the classroom. As a getting to know you activity your child will have brought home a brown bag which they need to fill with one or some of the suggested items. These bags need to be brought back by Tuesday please and this will be the home learning for this week. Next week I will set the first piece of home learning which your child will bring home in their home learning book. Please complete the activity with your child. Each activity is related to our learning from the week and should take no longer than twenty minutes to complete.
Reading
Your child will be asked to read and have their reading book changed at least once a week by myself or another member of the team. If they have finished their book and would like to change it please feel free to change their reading book in the morning. Reading books are kept in colour coded boxes just outside of Penhaligon class. If you are unable to change their book please mention to one of the team that their book needs changing and we will provide the children with the opportunity to do so at a later point in the day.
Home learning
In St Piran Class ‘Home Learning’ is celebrated and the children enjoy showing their classmates the learning they have completed in their own time. If your child would like to bring in home learning to share please make sure that it is related to our current learning. At the moment we have one more week on ‘The Big Build’ focussing on construction and The Three Little Pigs.
PE Kits
Our scheduled times for PE are on a Monday afternoon and a Wednesday afternoon. Each child will need their own labelled PE kit in school on these days. We will be going outside for PE as much as the weather allows us, so please make sure your child has either trainers or plimsolls in their PE kit. As the weather turns colder children are also allowed to wear either dark tracksuit bottoms or leggings as part of their PE kit.
If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to come and see us. You can also contact me on my School email address as included below or arrange an appointment to come and see me before or after School.
Many thanks
