St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 9th December

This week we have been revisiting our Number bonds to 10 and 20 in our Maths. We have been doing some last minute rehearsals for our Christmas Nativity next week.

Phonics

This term in our Phonics we have been re-capping Phase 3 of our Phonics. In the past few weeks we have learnt the new phonemes for phase 5. There are some excellent free games on Phonics Play to help your child practise their Phonics.

Home Learning

For your home learning I would like the children to complete the Number bonds to 10 or Number bonds to 20 activities. Number bonds to 10 and 20 are the pairs of numbers that add together to make either 10 or 20. We have been using our fingers and using Numicon to help us with our bonds this week. For extra Home Learning this week why not play Ping-pong ( A number bond to 10 game where one person says a number and the other person says the other number needed to make 10 or 20. We have played this game a lot recently and the children really enjoy it.)

Support tips:

  • Use fingers or draw your own pictures to represent the number bonds to 10. (See picture)
  • Encourage your child to refer to a number line or numbers around the house to help them write their numbers the correct way.

Nativity

Our performance is on Wednesday the 14th December at 2pm. We hope to see you there. Please make sure your child’s costume is in school.

Dates for your Diary and Reminders

We are a nut free school. We kindly ask that children do not bring in nuts or obvious nut products as part of their snack or lunches.

Saturday 10th December- FOPS Christmas Fayre

Tuesday 13th December- Christmas lunch day

Wednesday 14th December- Trevithick and St Piran Nativity performance 2pm

Friday 16th December- Christmas jumper day. £1 donation for Save the Children. Last day of Autumn  term.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 2nd December

This week we have finished writing our party game instructions in our English. We have been learning about counting in multiples of 2s, 5s, and 10s in our Maths.  We have also started making our Christmas crafts for the FOPS Christmas fayre.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ea’, ‘oy’ and ‘ir’ phonemes. Next week we will be learning ‘ue’, ‘aw’, and ‘wh’. If you have spare time practise segmenting words with these phonemes in with your child.

Home Learning

For your home learning I would like you to write about something you have done this weekend or a previous weekend. For example you might have gone to the park or to the beach or attended a birthday party. I would like everyone to write at least one sentence and to draw a picture or pictures. Don’t forget your capital letters, full stops, sounding out and wow words (adjectives). As an extra challenge why not write your own invitation for our Nativity.

Support tips:

  • Talk to your child about what they want to write first and ask them to practise saying their sentence out loud before writing it down.
  • Encourage your child to segment the words using their arm when they are spelling.
  • Help your child to read through their own writing to spot their own mistakes.

Nativity

Our performance is on Wednesday the 14th December at 2pm. We hope to see you there. Please make sure your child’s costume is in school in a named carrier bag by the 9th December.

Trevithick mud kitchen

Trevithick class are in the process of creating their own exciting mud kitchen. If you have any children’s waterproofs or wellies that are no longer needed please bring them in. Any donations will be gratefully received.

This week we have finished writing our bossy sandwich instructions in our English. We have been learning about more than and less than in our Maths.  We have also started our rehearsals for the Christmas Nativity and the children are all very excited about the play.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘ay’, ‘ou’ and ‘ie’ phonemes. Next week we will be learning ‘ea’ as in cup of tea, ‘oy’, and ‘ir’. If you have spare time practise segmenting words with these phonemes in with your child.

Home Learning

This week in our maths we have been learning all about place value. For your home learning I would like you to complete the missing number sequences or to order the numbers from smallest to biggest. For additional home learning this week why not practise sequencing two digit numbers from biggest to smallest and smallest to biggest or log on to Mathletics using your log in in your reading record and complete the Place Value activities on there. Don’t forget to practise your lines for our Nativity too.

Support tips:

  • Missing number activity-encourage your child to read the sequence out loud so they can see whether the numbers are getting smaller or bigger.
  • Use a numberline for extra support if needed.
  • Sequencing numbers by size- Read the four numbers first. Cross them out as you put them in order. Check it through when finished.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 4th November

This week we have started our new topic called ‘Let’s Celebrate’. In our Maths we have been learning about 2d and 3d shapes. With Mrs Davis this week we tasted a variety of fruit.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have learnt the ‘air’ phoneme. Next week we will be learning ‘ear’ and ‘ure’. In your child’s bookbag you should have received a list of suggested websites to support your child with their Phonics and a sheet with tips on how to support your child with their reading. If you would like any support with Phonics or have any questions please arrange a time to see me.

Home learning

This week in English our learning has focussed on the Charlie and Lola story ‘This is actually my party’. We have created our own freeze frames for parts of the story and written sentences about different parts of the story. For home learning this week I would like the children to write about the best birthday party they have ever been to. I would like all children to write at least one sentence about a birthday party. For extra home learning this week make a list or a mind map of all of the things you might need to throw a party.

Support tips:

  • Talk to your child about the best party they have ever been invited to.
  • Discuss what made it such a good party.
  • Encourage your child to sound out the words they want to use in their writing.
  • Encourage phonetic spelling unless it is a tricky word (words that we can’t sound out such as the) or a high frequency word that they recognise (e.g. have).
  • Ask your child to read through their writing to check that it makes sense and to check for capital letters and full stops.

Mathletics

Your child now has access to Mathletics. Mathletics is an online Maths programme allowing children to practise all aspects of Mathematics. Children can work towards certificates which are based on the amount they complete and not their level of mathematics. These certificates are awarded in assembly and the programme is hugely popular in our school.  Please find an individual log in and a password in your child’s reading record.  To log in to Mathletics use a search engine to search for Mathletics. On the homescreen in the top right hand corner click ‘sign in’. Use the username and password provided to sign in.  I have shown the children how to log on in class but they may require assistance at home.

Trevithick mud kitchen

Trevithick class are in the process of creating their own exciting mud kitchen. If you have any children’s waterproofs or wellies that are no longer needed please bring them in. Any donations will be gratefully received.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 21st October

This week in our English we have continued to explore Acrostic poetry. In Maths we have been practising our number bonds to 10 in a variety of ways. Thank you to everyone who came to support our Harvest Festival and for your contributions to our donation to the Foodbank.

Home Learning

For home learning over the holiday I have given each child the next 99 club challenge for them to try at home. The children are responding really well to the 99 club and particularly enjoy seeing if they can beat their own score from the previous time. The children are allowed ten minutes to complete the challenge and are encouraged to check their answers before the time runs out.

Support tips:

  • Encourage your child to use their fingers to help them or tap and unwrap.
  • When adding three numbers, add the two biggest first.
  • Remind your child that if they find one number sentence particularly tricky they can leave it out and come back to it later.
  • Some of the challenges include multiplication number sentences. At this stage we are encouraging children to think of multiplication as ‘lots of’. So 2 x 5 would be two lots of five. Children are allowed to draw quick pictures or arrays to help them with any of the questions.
–         Drawing pictures to help with addition.

For extra home learning this half term practise your number bonds to 10 and or keep a diary of your week.

– Arrays help with multiplication

Let’s Celebrate

After half term we will be starting our new topic. Our new topic is called ‘Let’s Celebrate!’ On the class page on the school website you can find more information about what we will be learning about in each subject. Within the topic we will be exploring celebrations which happen in our own families, communities and beyond. This topic will fit in nicely as we approach the Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

Dates for your Diary and Reminders

We are a nut free school. We kindly ask that children do not bring in nuts or obvious nut products as part of their snack or lunches.

St Piran Class Newsletter- 14th October 2016

This week in English we have been exploring Acrostic Poetry. The children wrote excellent poems using the letters in their names. In Maths we have been subtracting and in Science we investigated which materials sink and float.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have revisited ‘oo’, ‘ar’, and ‘or’. Next week we will be revisiting ‘ur’, ‘ow’ and ‘oi’.

Home Learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to create their own Autumn themed acrostic poem. We have been learning about acrostic poetry in our English this week. We have been looking at acrostic poems where the first letters of each line spell out a word.  They might like to use the word Autumn, Harvest, leaf or tractor. For extra home learning this week find a poem you like and bring it in to share with the class or go for a walk and see if you can spot any signs of Autumn. Take photos or draw the things you see and share them with the class.

Support tips:

  • Discuss Autumn themed words with your child and write them down in a mind map or list.
  • Encourage them to sound out any words they would like to write.
  • You might to use the following structure

C is for cuddly

A is for adventurous

T is for tiny

Junk Modelling

On Tuesday the children will be constructing their own houses in DT with Mrs Davis. If you have any spare clean junk modelling materials such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, yoghurt pots, plastic bottles etc. we would be grateful.

Harvest Festival

On Thursday the 20th October we will be celebrating Harvest by having a Harvest Festival with Trevithick class at St Michael’s Church in Perranporth. (9:45 start) We will be walking the children down and back to the church. We ask the children to bring in a contribution to our donation to the local foodbank. Suitable items include tins of fruits, vegetables, soups, packets of rice, pasta and biscuits. (No nuts please) Thanks in advance for you donations. Looking forward to seeing you at the celebration.
