9th January 2014

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! It is lovely to see everyone back after the Christmas break and we are very pleased to welcome Jack and Jules to our class.

Our New Topic
This week we have begun our new topic – National Celebrations. We have started finding out about Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, and have been comparing their jubilees. We have also been investigating the United Kingdom and learning what the different parts of the UK are.
In literacy, we have written letters to our penpals at St Columb Major Academy and we have started studying Cinderella ready to write our own versions with a twist!
In maths, we have been concentrating on solving maths problems, applying our skills in number, time, money and measuring length. A lot of the children are still struggling with telling the time and it would be really helpful if you could encourage them to tell the time, especially when it is half past or quarter to or past the hour.

Phonics
This term, we have changed how we will be teaching our phonics. Children will be taught according to their ability rather than their age and so will not necessarily be in their usual class for phonics sessions (these last for 20 minutes per day.) This will ensure that all children are given the support they need to progress rapidly in their reading and writing.

Next week
We will be concentrating on data handling next week in maths, continuing with our work on Cinderella and in history we will look at how everyday objects have changed since Victorian times.

Dates to remember
30th January – Penhaligon’s turn to provide cakes for the cake stall
10th February – Penhaligon Class assembly

As always, if you have any questions, please come and see me or email me on sburn.s@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .

Thank you.
Mrs Burns

Penhaligon Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,
Firstly, thank you to all the parents who came with us on our trip to Trerice today, without
them, we would not have been able to go.
We were unable to do the workshop we had planned to do, however, the children had
a great day, trying on chain mail, playing with spinning tops, brass rubbing, trying on
Tudor clothes and making detailed drawings of the beautiful ceilings in the building.
I am not setting any homework over the holidays, but the children should continue with
their daily reading and record it in their Reading Records.
I hope you have a lovely break and we will see you back here on Tuesday 4th November.
Thank you.
Mrs Burns

As you probably know, we were unable to do our workshop at Trerice today.
We will refund the £3 you have paid for this on Tuesday when we return to school.
Thank you.

Newsletter 17th October 2014

Dear Parents and Carers,
Firstly I would just like to give you an up-date about Mrs Willetts. Unfortunately, she is not well enough to return to school yet. She will be off for at least 4 more weeks. I know she misses the children and we all miss her and wish her a speedy recovery.
This week we have been looking at fractions in maths. Can your child show you how to divide a shape or group of objects in half or even quarters? Perhaps they could show you how we use quarters to tell the time.
In literacy, we have almost finished our information leaflets about materials. The children have researched materials and thought really carefully about how to lay out the information so that the reader finds it useful and easy to understand.
We devised experiments in science to test the properties of different materials, e.g. waterproof, strong, flexible.
Next week we will be going to town on Tuesday morning and to Trerice on Thursday, so we have a very exciting end of term. Your child will have a letter in their bag today about the Trerice trip. Please return the slip and payment as soon as possible.
As always, if you need to discuss anything, please come in and see me or email me on penhaligon@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.
Mrs Burns

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, I would like to thank all the parents who joined us on our walk to town on Thursday. We were lucky to have fantastic weather and the children all behaved impeccably. We have thought hard about what activities are available to us in Perranporth and where we can find healthy foods.

This week we have designed menus, thinking carefully about how to make them look attractive to our readers. In maths, we have been measuring and thinking about left and right, can your child remember which is their left or right arm and leg? We have also started learning our 2 times table.

On Monday, we had a visit from Mrs Edwards’ son, Stuart, who brought in his unusual pets – 2 snakes, 3 tarantulas and a collection of cockroaches! The children were fascinated and took turns holding the snakes, Bella and baby Daisy (who Penhaligon named!), as well as some cockroaches.

This was our last week studying our topic, What do I need to be me? I hope the children have enjoyed it as much as we have.

Next week, we will start our new topic, Through the Keyhole. This topic is based on science and history, focussing on materials and the history of everyday objects. The literacy elements will be recounts, adventure stories and non-fiction books linked to their science work on materials.

Just one last thing, we have had a couple of cases of nits in class this year. As a precaution, please could you check your child for head lice. If you find live lice, the wet combing method, together with the use of insecticides, is the recommended treatment. This should be repeated every two or three days for two weeks.

If you have any questions, as always, drop in to see me or email me on penhaligon@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Many thanks.

Mrs Burns.
