Boscawen Newsletter 23-10-15
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we have finished our topic, Why are Humans Animals too? The children have worked really hard and produced some fantastic work over the half term. Our topic next term will be Set in Stone, when we will investigate the Stone Age. It is a fascinating topic and we can’t wait to teach it!
We are sending all PE kits home. Can you please check that they are labelled before returning them next half term, as well as checking that your child has not grown out of their trainers!
Homework over half term is:
I enjoy maths, calculation and using measures and graphs.
Get your family and friends together and choose something to investigate. You could do something like: Who has the longest jump? Who can throw the furthest? Of, who is the tallest? You can think of your own if you like! Estimate the results first, then measure accurately. Record as 142cm, 1.42m or 1m 42cm.
This week’s spelling champs are Lucas R, Maisie and Sam Lee who all got 10 out of 10 – well done! Can anyone keep up with Sam Lee next half term and get 10 out of 10 every week?! There are no spellings over half term.
Have a lovely break and we will see you back in school on Tuesday 3rd November.
Thank you.
Mrs Smitheram and Mrs Burns.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Feadon Farm
We hope you have heard all about our fantastic trip to Feadon Farm! It was a really enjoyable day and the children made the most of all the opportunities to meet the different animals and learn about them.
Reading Diaries
Our new reading diaries have finally arrived! Thank you for your patience. Now that they are here, please record each time your child reads – they can also do this themselves, adding comments about what they have read and what they thought of it. Try to listen to your child read at least 5 times a week. We will check their diaries once a week to see how they are getting along.
Maths
In maths, we are continuing with our work on place value and using this knowledge to help with addition and subtraction. We have also been investigating 3-d shapes and their properties.
English
We have been developing our skills in writing formal letters this week, as well as learning how to take notes and write information texts about food groups. Next week, we will begin to work on adventure stories.
Spelling Superstars
Sam Lee retains his 100% record – well done! Well done also to everyone else who got 10 out of 10 last week. Spellings will be sent home again today ready for next Thursday’s test – get practising!
Just a quick reminder to parents of children with asthma
We sent all inhalers home at the end of last term. If your child is likely to need their inhaler in school, please drop it off at the office and check that your details and instructions are up to date.
If you would like to speak to us, as always, feel free to pop in and see us before or after school or email us on esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.

Dear Parents and Carers,
This week in English, we have continued to work on our descriptive writing, as well as beginning to write our information texts about animals. We will continue this next week.
In Maths, we have looked at addition and subtraction, looking for number facts such as doubles or number bonds to 10 to help us with the calculations. Next week, we will be practising subtraction by counting up and applying this skill by working out change.
We are developing our understanding of our topic (Why are Humans Animals too?) through dance, art and science.
In PE, we have been learning a new dance and practising different types of balance – can your child practise one leg squats?
Please continue to listen to your child read at least 5 times a week (we are still awaiting delivery of the new reading records and will send these home as soon as we can.)
As always, if you need to talk to us, please come in and see us or email us on esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.

Boscawen Newsletter 4th September 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is lovely to see everyone back at school and ready to learn!
Our topic this half term will be Why Are Humans Animals too? Please find an outline of the topic overleaf.
PE
We will be having PE on Tuesday and Friday. Many PE lessons will take place outside so please ensure your child has a named PE kit which includes track suit bottoms or leggings, trainers or plimsolls and a warm top.
Spellings
Spellings will be sent home on Fridays to be tested on the following Thursday. Now that the children are in Key Stage 2, we expect them to practise these at home and although they will be taught the relevant spelling rules for each set of words that are sent home, we will not be practising them in class.
Homework
Homework will begin next week and will be sent home in a book as last year. In the meantime, some of you will remember our Summer Reading Challenge when children took photos of themselves reading in unusual places (like Chapel Rock pool, at the dentist and in a beach hut!) We are planning an ‘extreme reading’ display board with Year 4 and would love some more photos like those! Please email us photos of extreme reading to Mrs Smitheram!
Fruit Stall
Children in Key Stage 2 can buy fresh fruit at play time. The cost is 30p for a piece of fruit, they are also welcome to bring in their own fruit to eat if they prefer.
If you have any questions, please come and see us or email us on esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.

Penhaligon Newsletter 10th July 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
Once again we would like to say how proud we are of the class. Their support for each other this week has been wonderful in desperately sad circumstances. Their behaviour, thoughtful words and beautiful singing at our Special Assembly yesterday was also a credit to them. Just a reminder that is a community balloon release for Esmee at 2.30 on Saturday in Bolenna Park if you would like to come.
This week we have also had a visit from our local Fire Safety officer who taught the children how to ‘Stop, Drop, Roll’ if a spark lands on them and also encouraged them to check smoke alarms at home and try to think of an escape route for their family to use if there was ever a fire. They have all been given a booklet from the Fire Service with safety-based activities in it.
In maths, the children have been investigating pentominoes – shapes made from 5 squares joined together – it is a tricky investigation which they all worked very hard on. There are lots of activities based on pentominoes if you Google it, e.g. http://www.scholastic.com/blueballiett/games/pentominoes_game.htm .
In literacy we have been looking at a story called Caterpillar Shoes – can your child remember all the characters in the story and which shoes they got?
Swimming will continue next week so please ensure that your child has their kit on Monday and Friday. We do swimming as our PE sessions this half term, so unless there is a medical reason not to join in, all children should take part. Living where we do, we feel it is vital that the children learn to be confident in the water and become good swimmers.
If you have any questions, as always, please drop in to see us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk.
Thank you.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.
Penhaligon Newsletter 26th June 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we have been thinking about the months of the year, what each month is identified with and what order they come in. The children made charts with their friends’ birth months on and used the information to produce bar charts. Their bar chart drawing has improved hugely, well done!
On Tuesday, Year 2 had their triathlon. We are very proud of the children’s hard work and good sportsmanship.
On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have a visit from a professional Samba teacher who led us through some of the steps so that we could dance a Samba procession around the hall. Everyone joined in and had lots of fun.
Next Wednesday, we will be visiting the beach again as part of our Outdoor Learning programme. We will need volunteer helpers again, so if you would like to join us, please let either of we know. A letter with permission slip will follow.
As always, if you have any questions, please do drop in to see either of us or email on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.
