St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 24th March

This week we have been focussing on missing number calculations and how to solve them. In our English this week we have enjoyed writing our own Acrostic poems. In our Science we have carried out a Science investigation. We are investigating what plant needs to help them grow.

Phonics

This term we will be continuing our Phase 5 in Phonics. This week we have been learning about the alternative pronunciations of ‘oo’, and ‘ai’’. Next week we will be learning ‘ee’, ‘oa’ and ‘igh’.

Home Learning

For Home learning this week I would like the children to complete the missing number activities. Please note there are different Maths activities this week. One of the activities involves counting and deciding whether the number sentence is addition or subtraction. Another activity involves using a number line to find the missing number. The final activity involved using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to solve missing numbers. For extra home learning this week why not have a go at writing a flower based acrostic poem or practise playing ‘Ping pong’ with your number bonds to 10 or 20. (One person says a number the other person says the other number needed to make 10/20)

Support tips:

  • Use counters, beads or gems (anything that you have lots of and can be moved easily) to represent numbers. Count forwards or backwards to work out which number is missing.
  • Encourage your child to read the sentence carefully.
  • In class we call the missing number something when reading the number sentence. E.g. 5 + something = 11
