Penhaligon Class Newsletter Friday 19th May

Penhaligon Newsletter 19.5.17

This week we have been completing our SATS. The children have been fantastic and a real credit to themselves. Well done Penhaligon class! In Science we made our own plant models and labelled them with Mrs Davis.

Home Learning and Reading

As we are finishing off Sats next week and the children will be tested in their spelling, reading and arithmetic I have not set any formal home learning. If you would like to you could continue to practise the 2s, 5s, and 10s times tables and revise any spellings previously learnt this year. As an optional activity practise telling the time with your child. We made our own clocks today and the children need to practise making and reading half past, quarter to, and quarter past times.  Please ensure you are reading with your child as often as possible. The children need to be practising their reading at home to ensure that they continue to build their fluency and develop their understanding. Please initial their reading record when you have read with them.

Recorder

Mrs Whatley will be coming in every Monday to teach recorder for the rest of this term. We have had three sessions so far and the children have been fantastic! We hope to include a recorder performance in our class assembly and open afternoon on Thursday 13th July.

St Piran Class Newsletter

St Piran Newsletter – 5th May 2017

This Week

This week we have continued our learning about the senses.  Gida’s mummy came to visit us with her guide dog, Penny.  The children thought of lots of great questions to ask and found out that Penny is working when her handle is up, so we shouldn’t try to stroke her.  They also found out that Penny has to stay really healthy so she can best look after Gida’s mummy so we shouldn’t ever try to give her extra food incase she gets tummy ache!

This was a fantastic learning opportunity – thank you very much Mrs Wilson.

Phonics

This week we have learnt ‘wh’, ‘ue’, and ‘aw’.  Next week it will be ‘ph’, ‘ew’, ‘oe’.

Home learning

For Home learning this week I would like the children to order the numbers in their books.

For an extra challenge:

Write down the biggest number and the smallest number you can make out of 1 and 9 (eg. 19 or 91).  Repeat giving your child other digits to play with.

Support tips:

  • Say the numbers with your child.
  • Look carefully at the first digit (the tens) in each number to help decide if the number is bigger or smaller than another.

Dates for you Diary and Reminders

We are a nut free school.  We kindly ask that children do not bring in nuts or obvious nut products as part of their snacks or lunches.

Wednesday 24th May – Year 1 and 2 Sports Day at 1.30pm.

Friday 26th May – Inset Day (the school will be closed)

Penhaligon Class Newsletter Friday 21st April

Penhaligon Newsletter 21.4.17

This week the children have been learning about money in their maths. They have been using coins to make different amounts. In English the children wrote a recount of their holidays and we have started exploring our new text for this term ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. In PE we have started our Sports day practise and in Science we planted our own beans with Mrs Davis. In our SEAL this term we will be exploring relationships and changes.

Home Learning

This week’s home learning is linked to our maths learning. The children have an amount and some coins. They need to draw the coins needed to complete the amount. Use actual coins to support your child and record the total after each coin is added. For extra home learning this week make your own story map of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Spellings

This week in our Phonics we have been learning about the past tense. Spellings this week are linked to irregular verbs.

Group 1- went, gave, had, told, slept, came, saw, made, ran, took.

Group 2- thought, bought, found, drew, caught, wrote, learnt, became, shone, chose.

Times tables

This week we will be learning the two times table. The children have a copy of the 2x table in their spellings book. They need to be able to recall the 2x table facts in and out of order. There will be a times table check every Friday.

St Piran Class Newsletter Friday 21st April

St Piran Class Newsletter- 21st April 2017

This Week

This week we have introduced our new topic about our bodies.  Thank you very much for supporting the home learning activity and delivering some beautifully labelled drawings.  Children learnt so much from each other during class discussion about these.  Summer told us about the smallest bone in our body and Gida told us about the longest.  They were fascinated that we have a cage to protect our lungs too!

Phonics

This week we have learnt ‘ai’, ‘ou’, and ‘ie’.  Next week it will be ‘ea’, ‘ir’ and ‘oy’.

Home learning

For home learning this week I would like the children to practise counting forwards or backwards from any number up to 100.

For an extra challenge Play ‘I spy a number’.

Give your child a clue to try and guess the number you are thinking of eg. Say, “It is 2 more than 31”, or “It is equal to 5 + 5” etc.

It’s not necessary to record anything in the home learning book but if your child would like to write a clue about a number, we will try and guess it in class.

Support tips:

  • Encourage the children to notice that the numbers are getting bigger when they count forwards and smaller when they count backwards.
  • Use the language ‘more/greater than’ and ‘less/fewer than’ when you are playing “I spy a number”.

Dates for you Diary and Reminders

We are a nut free school.  We kindly ask that children do not bring in nuts or obvious nut products as part of their snacks or lunches.

Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school with suitable shoes for running.  Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.
