Around the World in 20 Days Homework Grid

Hello and welcome to the second half of the spring term!

This term our topic is called “Around the World in 20 Days”. In this Unit, the children will be taken on a journey that begins in their own country, moves to France and ends in the USA. We will be comparing life and living in these countries and studying the culture and geographical features of each whilst comparing them.

As you know we are asked to send home one literacy and one numeracy homework each week as well as spellings, reading and times tables. This term we have decided to give you all 5 of the topic homework’s now and let you choose which order you wish to complete them. Please be creative with the homework outlines and although they may be based on a literacy of numeracy focus, these can be presented in any way you see fit to inspire!

Traditional Dishes. There are many traditional dishes and cousins that are accustomed to individual countries around the word. As we are studying UK, France and the USA, we would like you to create special traditional dish or meal for your chosen country (you choose the number of courses) and present to recipe instructions for your feast. How Much? – Price up the ingredients for your dishes. What is the difference in price between pounds and euros or dollars? Or, how much would it cost to make this meal for 10 people? Or for your own family?
Postcards from a far! Where in the UK or wider world have you or your family visited? Can you create a postcard “from a far” that describes the place and local culture of your chosen destination ready to add to our map? Map it – How far is it to your chosen destinations? Where can you stop on the way to refuel and how far is it between stops? How much fuel will you need and how much will this cost in total? Use the AA route planner to help you plan your journey.
The Long Journey. Research and plan a trip to a town or village in one of our chosen countries. Your trip should detail how and why you are visiting each place and give a short description of people or places that you could visit along the way. Going on a summer holiday- How much will your holiday cost? Where can you stay? Will you choose a hotel or a campsite? How long will you stay? Is breakfast included? Create a price breakdown for your imaginary journey.
A Journey Story. In class we are reading James and the Giant Peach because James goes on a journey in his peach. Think of any other film or story with a journey and write synopsis of the story/book for others.
