9th January 2014

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! It is lovely to see everyone back after the Christmas break and we are very pleased to welcome Jack and Jules to our class.

Our New Topic
This week we have begun our new topic – National Celebrations. We have started finding out about Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, and have been comparing their jubilees. We have also been investigating the United Kingdom and learning what the different parts of the UK are.
In literacy, we have written letters to our penpals at St Columb Major Academy and we have started studying Cinderella ready to write our own versions with a twist!
In maths, we have been concentrating on solving maths problems, applying our skills in number, time, money and measuring length. A lot of the children are still struggling with telling the time and it would be really helpful if you could encourage them to tell the time, especially when it is half past or quarter to or past the hour.

Phonics
This term, we have changed how we will be teaching our phonics. Children will be taught according to their ability rather than their age and so will not necessarily be in their usual class for phonics sessions (these last for 20 minutes per day.) This will ensure that all children are given the support they need to progress rapidly in their reading and writing.

Next week
We will be concentrating on data handling next week in maths, continuing with our work on Cinderella and in history we will look at how everyday objects have changed since Victorian times.
