Penhaligon Newsletter 14-2-14

14th February 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

This week we learned about Captain Scott’s trip to the South Pole. In 1910 Captain Scott and his team travelled to Antarctica in an attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. They sailed in the ship ‘Discovery’, but this got stuck in the ice and they had to walk the rest of the way. They did get to the South Pole, but unfortunately they weren’t first. They were beaten by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team. Sadly, Captain Scott and his team died on their return journey.

In Literacy, we took notes while watching film clips about Emperor Penguins and then turned them into full sentences. We also had a Big Write session this week. We wrote an information page about Emperor Penguins.

In Number we have been practicing our times tables and solving different multiplication problems. You can support your child at home by practicing the 2, 5 and 10 times table. When confident they can practice the 3 and 4 times table. Thank you.

Please continue to read regularly with your child at home. You will see our class star readers displayed each week on the window above the book bag boxes. To be a star reader the children must read to a grown up at home at least five times in the week and complete some activities in their reading diary.

The children have been given homework for the holiday. You will find this in their homework book. As not all homework books have been returned some children have their homework instructions on paper. Please check their book bags.

Please remember to visit the class blog on the school website: http://perranporth.j2webby.com/?cat=11

It has photographs and fun information about what your child gets up to in class.

Finally, have an enjoyable half term. Let’s hope the weather is kind.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs. Willetts and Mrs. Burns (Class teachers)
