Dear Parents and Carers

It was great to see so many of you at our assembly. Thank you! We hope you enjoyed it. The children did very well to remember all their lines. We will have another class assembly next term.

We continue to learn more about the Great Fire of London. This week, we learnt about Samuel Pepys and his diary. He wrote about the Great Fire as it happened. We found out that he buried some of his belongings in his garden in an effort to save them from the fire. He even buried his cheese! A good website to view which you can access at home is:

www.fireoflondon.org.uk

In Literacy we imagined what the fire must have been like and we used our senses to write about it. We are trying very hard to improve and up-level our descriptive writing by using amazing adjectives and a range of connectives to join our ideas.

In Number this week we have been writing word problems to match multiplication and division number sentences:

4 x 6 = 24

The baker needs to put his buns into packets. He has 4 packets and fills each packet with 6 buns. How many buns has he baked?

20 ÷ 5 = 4

There are 20 children and they are put into teams of 5. How many teams will there be?

Please continue to read regularly with your child at home and remember to record this in the reading diary. In addition to their school book, it would really help us to know which books they read for personal enjoyment at home so please record those in the diary. Also, please remember to encourage your child to complete the reading activities.

It is really great to see Penhaligon class having a high percentage of attendance during this half term so well done! Remember that extra playtime is rewarded each week to the class who has the highest rate of attendance.

Please remember to visit the class blog on the school website: http://perranporth.j2webby.com/?cat=11

On the blog you will find the weekly spelling lists as well as photographs and fun information about what your child gets up to in class.

Penhaligon News 7-3-14

7th March 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

This week we have started our science unit ‘Changing Materials’. We looked at a variety of materials and thought about their properties such as flexible or rigid, smooth or rough, etc. We then sorted materials according to these properties. We also learned three new science words: transparent, translucent and opaque. Please ask your child to explain their meaning to you. You can support your child at home by finding for items that are transparent, translucent or opaque.

In Literacy, we began to look at familiar settings that we might find in stories such as a library, supermarket or park. We thought about what the reader might need to know about these places and we used our senses to help write descriptive sentences about them. Can you guess which setting the following sentences refer to?

The birds perched on the wire like washing hanging on a line.

The children giggled and sang as they slid down the cold slide.

The tills went ‘beep, beep, beep’ as if they were playing a happy tune.

In Number we estimated the number of different items before counting them. Some of us even counted a 3kg bag of pasta. Altogether we counted 2859 pieces of pasta. Wow! It took us a long time to count them all and we agreed that it would have been better if we counted in multiples of 100.

Please continue to read regularly with your child at home and remember to record their reading in the reading diary. Please also encourage your child to complete the reading activities.

Unfortunately, it has been noted that some children are continually arriving late in the morning. Could we please remind you to arrive at school before the bell rings at 9 o’clock. After this time your child will be marked ‘late’ in the register.

Please remember to visit the class blog on the school website: http://perranporth.j2webby.com/?cat=11

It has photographs and fun information about what your child gets up to in class.

Finally, we would like to welcome Ellis to the class. He has already made lots of friends and is settling into class well.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs. Willetts and Mrs. Burns (Class teachers)
