Boscawen Newsletter 28th April 2017
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week, we have continued with our Roman topic and the children have started work on writing information leaflets in literacy.
In maths we are looking at time – telling the time on an analogue clock as well the number of days in a month or week and how many months in a year. Could you please encourage your child to read the time as much as possible and discuss how long you spend doing activities etc.
This week, we had our first times table test – we found out that lots of us don’t know the division facts for the table. Any practise you can squeeze in would be very useful! I have put a practice sheet for the 3 times table on the reverse of this sheet for children to practise too.
On last thing, could everyone check their children’s sweatshirts to see if they have accidentally taken home Alex Day’s top? It is labelled and he lost it earlier this week. Thank you.
As always, if you have any questions, please email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram.cornwall.sch.uk .
Thank you.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Boscawen Newsletter 21st April 2017
Dear Parents and Carers,
The children have made a great start on our new topic, What did the Romans do for us?
This term is a very busy one, so here are some reminders and dates:
- Tuesday 25th April – swimming starts – don’t forget your kit!
- 12TH June – SRE week
- Wednesday 14th June – Key Stage 2 Sports Day
- PE will be on Fridays, we will try to get outside as often as possible, so please check that your child’s trainers/plimsolls are in their kit.
As you already know, we are focusing on times tables this term. By the end of Year 3, children are expected to know the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables by heart. They should be able to recite the table in order, answer multiplication out of order and know the related division facts for each table. This week, we will start with the 2 times table. We know a lot of children are already confident with this table so this will be a chance for them to recap these number facts.
If you need to contact us at any time, please drop in to see us or email us on sburns@perranporth.cornwall.sch.uk or esmitheram@perranporth.sch.uk.
Thank you.
Mrs Burns and Mrs Smitheram.

Literacy | Reviewer
Read a book or watch a film / TV program about the Romans and write a review. You should include details about the content and decide what was good or not so good and explain why. |
Instructions:
Find a Roman recipe. Create a step by step set of instructions for a primary school student to follow.
|
|||
Maths | Go on a shape hunt at home. Which 3d shapes can you spot in the objects around you? Draw and label the shapes you spot.
Challenge: Think of different ways of sorting the shapes – which criteria would you use? |
Roman Numerals.
Make some Roman Numeral number sentences for your friends or family to solve. Can you write your date of birth in Roman Numerals? |
|||
Art | Design a toy for a Roman child. Remember it can only be made of materials which the Romans had – no plastic!
You can draw or paint your toy, don’t forget to label it – or you can make it and bring it in to show us! |
Design a comic strip that tells the story of a major event in Roman history. It should include pictures and text. You could choose:The death of Caesar
The fall of Rome or another event. |
|||
Research | The Romans spoke a language called Latin.
What can you find out about it? Can you find some Latin words which are still used today in this country? |
Research a Roman town. You can present your findings in a town profile. Examples:
Istanbul Pompeii Herculaneum Colchester |
